Disney Contemplating Creation Of Cruise Line

Walt Disney Co. may launch its newest venture from a shipyard.

Disney officials confirmed that they are considering starting a cruise line, allowing Florida tourists to combine a Disney cruise with a Walt Disney World vacation.

A company official said last week that designs are nearing completion in Norway, but no money has been committed to building ships.

''It's not just window shopping,'' Peter Rummel, president of Disney Development and Design told the Los Angeles Times.

Disney is aligned with Port Canaveral-based Premier Cruise Lines, but the agreement with the ''Big Red Boat'' ends March 31. Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise lines negotiated to become the next ''official cruise line of Walt Disney World,'' but neither signed, reportedly because Disney wanted too much money.

Should Disney contract to build ships, construction is likely to take two to four years.

Meanwhile, Disney World has begun signing agreements with several cruise lines, allowing them to book their passengers into Disney hotels for a theme park vacation before or after their cruises.

''We want the cruise industry to be able to provide their clients with a Disney land vacation,'' said Randy Garfield, president of Walt Disney Travel Co.
