Upstart Party Scores Victory in India State Elections

Aam Aadmi’s Win in Delhi Seen as Setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and His Party

NEW DELHI—A fledgling political party that has pledged to fight corruption in India’s capital won a sweeping victory in state elections in Delhi on Tuesday in a major political embarrassment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Aam Aadmi Party won 67 of 70 seats in the state assembly, according to India’s Election Commission. Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, which controls India’s central government, captured just three.
