Judy Bernly (Jane Fonda), a housewife whose husband has left her for his secretary, begins her own secretarial career at a huge corporation. Violet Newstead (Lily Tomlin), a feisty, veteran office manager, instructs her on the perils and procedures of office life -- and of working for Franklin Hart Jr. (Dabney Coleman), their chauvinistic, sleazy boss, and his right-hand woman, the crisp, nosy Roz (Elizabeth Wilson). Although it can probably be argued that Patricia Resnick and director Colin Higgins' script [from a story by Resnick] at times borders on the inane, the bottom line is that this picture is a lot of fun.
Despite an excellent and promising cast, this Hollywood attempt at a mainstream feminist comedy is flabby and bland.
[Parton] is, on the basis of this one film, a natural-born movie star, a performer who holds our attention so easily that it's hard to believe it's her first film.
It's clearly a movie that began as someone's bright idea, which then went into production before anyone had time to give it a well-defined personality.
A frequently hilarious comic revenge fantasy that struck a cord with people from all walks of life.
A women's lib valentine.
So-so office revenge comedy that seems way overpraised in retrospect.
9 to 5 works as a wish-fulfillment satire on male chauvinism.
Gets off to a great start but loses its taste for revenge toward the end.
Guilty pleasure. I'm sorry, but Lily Tomlin as a demented Snow White, complete with animated birdies? Rock!
Dolly Parton's supporting role as a secretary is the most memorable aspect.
Seen nearly 30 years later, it actually seems better than ever -- which may be as much a comment on the state of comedy films today as on the quality of Nine to Five.
Infectiously entertaining little 80's comedy that features three great leading ladies and the immortal Dabney Coleman.
Tomlin, Parton, and Coleman all arguably turn in the most memorable roles of their careers. And then there's the script, which is sharp, jaded, and nihilistic, unusual for films form this era, which were typically dripping with sentimentality.

- Violet Newstead: I'm no fool. I've killed the boss, you think they're not gonna fire me for a thing like that?
-
- Franklin Hart Jr.: At LEAST you're pretty. You should see some of the crones who come through here.
-
- Violet Newstead: We're gonna need a special locker for the hat.
