KFC Corporation is the largest fast-food chicken franchiser in the world. The company operates more than 5,000 restaurants in the United States and approximately 5,200 more in 79 other countries. KFC is best known for its founder, Colonel Harland Sanders, and his Original Recipe Chicken, with its secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, and the unique package—the red and white bucket of fried chicken.
Colonel Sanders developed his chicken recipe over many years, introducing it at his service station and then at his motel and restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. He signed his first franchise in 1952 and incorporated in 1955. The company has grown through a succession of owners, including John Y. Brown, Jr.; Jack Massey; Heublein Inc.; R.J. Reynolds Industries; and PepsiCo. In 1997 PepsiCo spun off its restaurant operations, and KFC became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tricon Global Restaurants, which also owns the other former PepsiCo restaurant chains, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.
The history of KFC Corporation started long before the first restaurant opened. Harland Sanders (born in 1890) began cooking when he was six years old. His father had died and his mother was working two jobs, so it was up to him to care for his younger brother and sister. He left home at age 15 and held a variety of jobs until he opened a service station in 1929 in Corbin, Kentucky.
