The legendary Bushy's Bar, was where it all started, back in October 1984 when brother and sister Martin and Nicky Brunnschwieler took over Zhivago's Bar in Douglas. Martin originally only came over for a weekend to help out…

“But somehow, I stayed on a bit longer” explains Martin.

In 1986 it was decided to set up a mini brewery in the basement, brewing the now famous Old Bushy Tail, an appealing reddish brown beer with a sweet, malty palate and a hoppy, toffee finish. A "proper" brewer was brought in Davey Jones - a Londoner whose background was with the Firkin chain. “I could only bluff my way for so long!” says Martin.

The new brewery opened in 1990, with beer guru Michael Jackson, of Beer Hunter fame officially cutting the ribbon.

“Today the brewery goes from strength to strength, under brewer - Neil "Curly" Convery” says Martin.

Bushy’s real “Ale of Man” is an indelible part of the TT hall of fame, and now produces a mouth-watering range of specialised brews including bottled premium export brands and even a special brew for Gibraltar.

“At the core is our Bushy’s Export Bitter which is bar far our most popular ale” explains Martin “But we pride ourselves on the sheer range of beers from wheat beers to seasonal brews, to our famous Oyster Stout”.

Purity is a byword for all Isle of Man beers. It started with the enactment of our Brewing Purity Law in 1874 which forbids the use of any ingredients other than malt, sugar, hops, yeast and water. Today that standard is maintained, which means that Manx beers are bywords for quality and integrity.
