Two people were killed about 3:20 a.m. today when a tornado spawned by the remnants of Hurricane Gustav touched down southwest of Mamou in Evangeline Parish. The National Weather Service said four or five homes were damaged and several people were injured.

They were among the deaths directly or indirectly related to Gustav.

A Calcasieu Parish sheriff's deputy and his father were found dead Tuesday from carbon monoxide poisoning created by a generator. The deaths of Deputy Eric Bellard, 27, and his father, Dannis, were directly related to the storm because they were using a generator to provide electricity, the coroner's office said.

Gustav is believed to have played a role in the death of a St. Martinville resident in a house fire. Officials believe a candle being used after power was lost started the fire Monday night. The victim's name has not been released.

Grant Parish sheriff's deputies said a woman died in Bentley Monday night when a tree hit a house where she was staying during Gustav. Three other people trapped in houses by toppled trees were taken to hospitals with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening, deputies said.

A Metairie couple evacuating ahead of Hurricane Gustav were killed Sunday when their car rolled off U.S. Highway 61 north of Vicksburg, Miss. Killed were Albert Daigrepont Jr., 86, and his wife, Jennie, 77.

Four evacuees were killed in Georgia over the weekend when their car ran off Interstate 20 and hit a tree.

In Baton Rouge, police said Richard Broussard, 72, and his wife, Mary Ann, 71, died when a tree fell on their daughter's house. The couple had driven to Baton Rouge from Abbeville to take shelter from the hurricane. The daughter and her boyfriend suffered moderate injuries, police said.

A 27-year-old Lafayette man was killed when a tree fell on his home as Gustav whipped through the area.

A woman died over the weekend in a wreck between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

A New Orleans family who evacuated to Texas to escape Gustav is grief-stricken over the death of a 7-month-old daughter who collapsed while on a trip to Six Flags to take their minds off Gustav.

Kerri Vidal said her 7-month-old daughter, Kaitlynn Foret, died Monday after she suddenly stopped breathing. The baby, who had a genetic disorder, was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died. The medical examiner's ruled Kaitlynn died from complications of Joubert syndrome with Dandy-Walker malformation.

Vidal said she doesn't regret evacuating. Her daughter's death, while an unexpected tragedy, could have happened anywhere, she said.
