Fraser Papers informed Gov. Lynch late this afternoon that it plans to close the mill on May 6th, a move that will impact 250 employees. According to the company, the Gorham paper plant will remain open.

"I know how extremely difficult this closure will be for the employees of the plant, the City of Berlin, and the entire North Country. I pledge that the state will do everything possible to assist the employees of the pulp mill, and their families. I have activated the state's rapid response team, and its members will be on the ground as soon as possible to begin offering assistance," Gov. Lynch said.

Gov. Lynch held a conference call this afternoon with the Workforce Opportunity Council and the Departments of Resources and Economic Development, Labor, and Employment Security to begin coordinating the state's assistance. He directed the Workforce Opportunity Council to lead the rapid response effort, in coordination with other agencies.

Gov. Lynch plans to meet with state agencies tomorrow afternoon to continue coordinating the state's assistance for workers, families and the affected communities.
