History of The Teletype CorporationChicago / Skokie, Illinois, USA |
|
Teletype Corporation was originally founded in 1906 as the Morkrum Company. In 1925, a merger between Morkrum and Kleinschmidt Electric Company created the Morkrum-Kleinschmidt Company. The name was changed in 1929 to Teletype Corporation. In 1930, Teletype Corp was purchased by the Bell System and became a subsidiary of Western Electric. In 1984, the divestiture of the Bell System resulted in the Teletype name and logo being replaced by the AT&T name and logo, and consolidation started to take its toll. Sadly, the remnants of Teletype Corp disappeared by 1990. Today, the 100+ acre location of their headquarters and factory is a shopping mall.
"Village of Skokie - Touhy/Carpenter District - This site was previously the location of the largest
industry and corporate headquarters in the Village, the AT&T Teletype
facilities. AT&T had at one time employed about 4,000 people in the 1.2
million sq. ft. plant on a 60 acre site bridging the border of Skokie and Niles.
Due to changing technology and the need to consolidate operations, AT&T
vacated the facilities in 1987-88. The site was sold to a commercial development
partnership and was re-developed as the Village Crossing Shopping Center in
1989-90."
