Crime in the United States, by Region, Geographic Division, and State, 2017–2018

  • In 2018, the estimated number of violent crimes in the United States decreased 3.0 percent when compared with 2017 data.
  • When comparing the 2-year estimates, violent crimes decreased in three of the four regions, with the largest decrease (4.5 percent) occurring in the Midwest, followed by a decrease of 4.4 percent in the Northeast, and a decline of 3.9 percent in the South. Violent crime increased in the West by 0.3 percent.
  • The estimated number of murders decreased 9.1 percent in the Midwest, 7.4 percent in the West, 5.3 percent in the South, and 2.3 percent in the Northeast.
  • The number of rapes (revised definition), increased 4.4 percent in the West, 3.7 percent in the Northeast, 2.3 percent in the South, and 1.0 percent in the Midwest.
  • The estimated number of robbery offenses in 2018 fell 17.9 percent in the Midwest, 14.2 percent in the Northeast, 12.6 percent in the South, and 6.0 percent in the West.
  • Estimated aggravated assault offenses increased 2.5 percent in the West, but declined 1.8 percent in the South, 1.1 percent in the Northeast, and 0.5 percent in the Midwest.
  • For 2018, the estimated number of property crimes nationwide decreased 6.3 percent when compared with the 2017 estimate.
  • The estimated number of property crimes declined 8.0 percent in the Midwest, 7.6 percent in the Northeast, 6.1 percent in the South, and 5.0 percent in the West.
  • The estimated number of burglaries decreased 15.3 percent in the Northeast, 13.6 percent in the Midwest, 12.6 percent in the South, and 8.5 percent in the West.
  • Larceny-thefts declined 7.1 percent in the Midwest, 6.6 percent in the Northeast, 5.2 percent in the South, and 3.8 percent in the West.
  • When compared with the 2017 estimates, the estimated number of motor vehicle thefts in 2018 decreased 6.4 percent in the West, 3.8 percent in the Midwest, and 3.5 percent in the Northeast. However, motor vehicle thefts rose 0.9 percent in the South.
