Description

G. P. GANSTER.
SPHB GAL No. 43,017. Patnted June '7, 1864.
UNrrED STATES ATENT Errore.,
GEORGE I). GANSTER, OF NV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING SABOTS T0 SPHERICAL PROJECTILES FOR ORDNANCE.
Specification forming part oi' Letters Patent N o. 43.0!7, dated .lune 7, ISG-l.
To @ZZ whom, it man concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE l). GANsTER, of the city, county, andState of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spherical Shells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a central section of a shell With my improvement having the sabot attached. Fig. 2 is a frontview ofthe sabot.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of my invention is to obtain a cheaper and :more effective attachment for the sabots of spherical shells than the straps commonly used, and to eftectually prevent the rolling and turning over of the shells in the bore of the gun in their discharge; and to this end it consists in providing on such shells, opposite the fuse-hole, a screw-threaded pin or teat, which enters and is secured tightly in a 4 hole provided for its reception in the sabot,
and thus effects the desired result.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the shell, having cast upon it, opposite the fuse-hole c, the short slightly-taper pin or teat b, on the exterior of which is formed a screw-thread. This thread may be produced in the casting of the shell.
l B is the sabot, made of the usual form, but
its front cavity, d, a hole, c, for the reception of the pin or teat b of the shell, which is screwed tightly into the said hole till the shell comes to a bearing in the cavity d. By this means the shell is attached securely to the or turning over in the gun. After leaving the gun with the shell, the sabot is soon detached and left behind.
it and being screwedinto the hole in the sabot the pin or teat b may be made plain and driven tightly enough into the hole c in the sabot to make a sufficiently secure attachment.v f
XVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, :is-
GEORGE P. GAN-STER.
