Manga Sales in Japan Reached Highest Point in History in 2022

manga sales

2022 turned out to be another impressive year for manga around the world, and in Japan the combined print and digital sales reached record numbers once again. The final tally has it at 677 billion yen (about US$5.264 billion), making it the best year for manga sales in Japanese history.

This is just a 0.2 percent increase from 2021’s 675.9 billion yen, but while the leap may not be as impressive as that year’s 10.3 percent increase, it shows continual growth. The proportion of manga in the overall Japanese publishing market was also up, rising 1.1 percent from 2021 to hit 41.45 percent total.

As for the difference between print and digital, the print manga market saw a decrease of 13.4 percent for a sales total of 229.1 billion yen. Total digital sales saw an increase of 8.9 percent to 447.9 billion yen, making for an overall manga market share of 66.2 percent. This growth was also slower than the increase seen in 2021, but it still remains higher than ever before on all accounts.
