UFC Fight Night 34 results: Max Holloway swarms, batters Will Chope for TKO

max-holloway-ufc-fight-night-34SINGAPORE – In a clash of 145-pound youngsters, Max Holloway helped salvage his can’t-miss-prospect status and put on an impressive striking display to stop Will Chope.

The featherweight bout closed out the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 34 event at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore. It streamed on the UFC’s new Fight Pass digital network.

Chope had the edge early in the first round, bloodying Holloway’s nose with lunging punches, a few knees from the Thai clinch, and some low kicks. But midway through the round, Holloway began to open up and landed flush with quick combos, a spinning back kick and hard straight punches. A final volley staggered Chope and was only cut short by the end of the round.

Chope quickly shook off the damage between rounds, but Holloway wasted little time before dazing the 6-foot-4 fighter with another swarm of punches. With Chope backed against the fence, Holloway unloaded a violent barrage of punches and a spinning back kick. Chope was wobbled, and he clinched to buy some recovery time. But Holloway quickly separated and then unloaded the fight-ending barrage of power punches to the head and body.

Chope hit the mat and turtled up, and the ref moved in to stop the fight at the 2:27 mark of the second round.

“He was hitting me with some good shots, but I bit down, and I survived,” said Holloway, who dedicated the win to his son, who was celebrating his birthday.

Holloway (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) successfully rebounded from a two-fight losing skid to Dennis Bermudez and Conor McGregor with the needed win. Chope (19-6 MMA, 0-1 UFC), meanwhile, halted a 14-fight win streak he had built over the past two years on the Asian regional circuit.
