From ტფილისი (ṭpilisi). The spelling change, which occurred in the early 20th century, was motivated by the development of the word it is originally derived from (ტფილი (ṭpili, warm)თბილი (tbili)). Compare Old Armenian Տփղիս (Tpʻłis).
