And Moorpark, spelled backwards, is Kraproom.

Felicitations!

> Anyone care to summarize what took place ???

The Darklord did an overview of how to teach the basic skills,
emphasizing the pass/set/hit method of skills acquisition

- Gym time is precious.
* Players should be ready to go
* Warmup in context of game

- Three passer alignments: "Right is wrong, left is right" theory of
who takes which ball (Moving to left preferable)

- Shock-absorbing hard-driven serves using an exaggerated platform
drop technique

- Digging techniques:
* J-stroke: Ready position to execution
* Side sprawl/Half-roll recovery taught by coach of Westlake High (forgot
the gentleman's name)
* Front-sprawl and fore-arm slide technique: Use sweatshirt to
minimize friction during skill acquisition

- Setting: Jeff Stork's methods of getting to balls off the net,
emphasizing left-foot preparation and setting from the midline
* Pass into the middle and move forward into the ball
* Try to minimize stylish turn moves into the ball
* Take ball high
* Underspin
(That being said, everyone who set in the drills took the ball in
front of his/her face instead of above the head as taught by D. Green
and J. Stork)

- Hitting: Four-step approach and rhythm. Short/med/long progression
and why
* Outside-in approach
* Drop center of mass, compress, extend, elevate
* "High package" with hitting elbow above shoulder
* Turning into the ball and using torque to generate power in all
directions
* Quick hitting approaches: 31 and front 1 from area 2 and 4
* Speed first, accuracy later with young players

- Float serving
* Stepping into ball for young players
* Speed first, accuracy later with young players

- Jumpserving
* High toss to give time for approach
* USA does not have a manly-man jumpserver compared to other countries
* 4 step approach with hitting rhythm above
* Speed first, accuracy later

- Blocking
Running close on time so not much development here

- Wash drills
* Teams earn right to score points only after winning 3/4/5 rallies
(Wahooga, what a concept, eh?)

- Future plans:
* More chalk talks
* More often
* Focussing on one or two specific areas each time

- Taco Bell for food and assorted discussions
* Psychotic parents in youth sports
* Olympic experience: One channel for each sport in Australia, 24
hrs/dy
* USA Men: Who will take over? Unclear at this time if a change will
be made
* Player turnover is likely

Other than that, I don't remember much.

Congrats! Although being from Lompton (Lompoc), I have to say "GO CIF -
SOUTHERN SECTION!!!"

Hmmm...interesting observation on setting technique. I have some old
tapes of both Stork and Green from their playing careers on the National
Teams. Wonder what the position of the ball is when they make a set?
I'll have to take a closer look.

What? No Bas? No Pascual? No Giani? SAY IT ISN'T SO!

NBC tried that here in the US in '92 and it failed miserably. Only
people who bought the packages were videotape junkies like me. The
no-commercial broadcasts were great to watch, but the cost prohibitive
(they ended up selling one-day packages, which I bought, after the
Gold/Silver/Bronze packages didn't sell).

We know. The chalk-talk was just a prelude to the hanging-out in the
Taco Bell parking lot eating $.99 bean burritos for you.

Like TJ, I wanted to go to this chalk-talk, however prior commitments
(just started a club locally and this is our first week of practice)
prevented me from going. Although I've heard Marv speak at numerous
clinics, I always walk away with some "golden nuggets" of coaching
theory/skill instruction/coaching philosophy. Unlike alot of other
volleyball coaches who get up during clinics and talk just to hear
themselves talk, Vader and his staff (Stork, Harlan Cohen) really know
the business of volleyball coaching and more importantly how to pass
that information on to other coaches effectively.

Marv is talking at the Southern California session of the National
Coaching Clinic (for volleyball) coming up Jan 26-28 2001, held in
Irvine. For $80, it's a terrific deal - considering the volleyball
coaching talent scheduled to present topics, along with the general
coaching keynote speakers and the all-sports exhibits. Check out the
information on an earlier RSV post. Or call (949) 646-4241. Web site:
http://www.nationacoachesclinic.com

When it comes to teaching the game of volleyball, the 3 people I think
do it best:

1. Marv
2. John Kessel (no one knows youth/beginning volleyball coaching
better)
3. Bill Neville (his books are the best I've ever read)

On that '96 tape it looked like Olof van der Meulen had one sizzler of
a jumpserve. Giani was topping out at 70mph (112kph), winning the speed battle,
but Olof had some weird-ass action on some of his. Their 6'9" setter
could run the offense from the 3m line, too.

Ah, yes. How could I have forgotten Olof? Show angle on the right-side
approach, let opponent block take your angle, then just hit more angle.
=) He knocked Paolo Tofoli (Italy's setter) square on his booty at
least twice in that match.

The FIVB Technical Journal (and video) describes how Italy defended
against the top jump-servers like Van der Meulen by employing a 4-person
receive pattern, which in the international game is very rare. I know
alot of people didn't like this publication, but if you read closely for
content and ignore the obvious grammar and English errors, it has a
wealth of information. I believe this is probably a pub that was
transcribed into English from the original document.

I also liked the way he rolled up his collar, too. Muy Macho.

Our 6'8" setter can run the offense from the 3m line. Kinda....

You just got used to the Dutch announcer saying Bas's name every three
seconds. 6'11", served rockets, passed well, hit the quick, the bic, and the D-ball, and
blocked like a bureaucrat. Other than that, he had no game, whatsoever. :-P

I remember Tofoli falling on his netherlands... Olof went hard angle on Giani and
Gardini. And did they ever give him line.

Who didn't like that publication?! That book/video was superb. I
still watch it from time-to-time.
