Remove non-free clause #80

Only one word: retron5 |
That's not feasible - as you stated there are too many people involved, many of which have disappeared. It's also not something I'd want to do. |
Can we close this if the issue is no longer needed? |
@sergiobenrocha2 said it best; I would rather the hard work of emulator authors and contributors not be ripped off for commercial profit (without contributing back to the community that created it) like Hyperkin, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony have done (along with many MANY other companies). If you want to increase interest in the project then you may want to hang out with emulator authors and get an inside look on why things have stagnated. I'll give you the short version. This is the kind of thing that has globally affected nearly all open-source projects because GPL-violating asshole companies swoop in and ninja the code and make all the money off of it without a damn shred of attribution or contributing back to the project itself. PCSX2 went through this (Sony ripped em off) and various other emulators went through it with the Hyperkin debacle: http://www.libretro.com/index.php/hyperkins-retron5-continuing-licensing-problems/ And not only this, but authors of this open-source code then get taken to court and SUED for using their own code in a competing product! And who would sue? Why the very GPL-violating assholes I already mentioned! It is just a clusterfuck and very few emulator authors want to bother anymore with SNES emulation (byuu kinda made the definitive 100% accurate one and that's basically it). |
Is it feasible to remove the non-commercial clause and relicense snes9x under a free license (permissive or no)? I understand this is pretty difficiult due to all the people involved, but is it something that's been considered? Recently another emulation project, MAME, has done this for the following reasons:
It would really help with making snes9x easier to distribute as well, since snes9x is currently nonfree and therefore non-compliant with packaging standards in mainstream GNU/Linux distributions.
