      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Silver Linings Playbook walks a tricky thematic tightrope, but David O. Russell's sensitive direction and some sharp work from a talented cast gives it true balance.

John K Amazing performances by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Some really tough scenes in the beginning but then a great payoff at the end! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/29/24 Full Review Terry H Circled back to this one and what a gem it is compared to what's put out these days. So many themes come together to make this five stars. Dealing with loss, mental illness, family dynamics, setting a goal and perseverance, etc. Loved the ending. Great acting all around. What movie making used to be. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Sidney S I honestly really enjoyed this movie. I'm a huge psych nerd. But I'm also a big romantic comedy fan. This movie pairs both of these together. The movie keeps you on your toes, but also makes you laugh and smile. I hope you enjoy it like I did! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/29/24 Full Review Igor S Took me many years to finally watch this one, but now that i did, i can safely say this movie hits different than other romantic comedies or "romantic"movies. The characters aren't flawless, but complex and even realistic. For how crazy it might sound, i know people in my life like the two main characters. I think that's why so many people enjoyed this movie: it's very relatable. Definitely recommended! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Астрос Very heartfelt, atmospheric, sincere and warm. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Jeff M Every once in awhile, I'll revisit a film I didn't like when it first came out just to see if my opinion has changed, especially when the movie is so universally acclaimed and beloved by audiences as this one. Well, I gave it another shot, and my dislike remains the same, if not a bit worse. I will never understand the appeal here. Watching a documentary about the movie on the DVD afterwards, I understand it has been embraced by the mental health community in how it portrays mental illness. I'm happy to hear that, but I don't review movies based on good intentions - I can only go by my own personal reaction. There is not a single solitary character in this movie I could tolerate, sometimes painfully so. The first time I watched it, I was impressed by Cooper's performance, but this time even he grated on my last nerve. The fact that Lawrence won an Oscar for this is mind boggling to me. The dialogue feels scripted rather than natural, and the pat, predictable ending seems incongruous with the rest of the film. So, unfortunately I gotta stand by my first impression on this one. It remains as one of the great disappointments of its decade. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Katie Presley Bitch Media Frustrating as it can be to watch, nixing nuance for a heavy-handed storyline that convinces viewers of Pat and Tiffany's humanity is forgivable. Jan 14, 2021 Full Review Lisa Mullen Sight & Sound Russell's smart, snappy script is delivered by a top-notch cast, including two thoroughly likeable and well-matched leads. Apr 9, 2018 Full Review Emma Myers Film Comment Magazine But Silver Linings Playbook never induces a roll of the eyes, even if it never really surprises. Nov 5, 2013 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Fueled by unexpected dramatic turns and a gamut of oddball hang-ups that set the comic tone, Silver Linings Playbook marks another decisive triumph for David O. Russell, who’s made both the funniest film and the most heartening romance in recent memory. Rated: 4/4 Sep 21, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s a sharp romantic comedy that avoids the usual pitfalls associated with the genre today – that is right up until the end.
