MIAMI DOLPHINS

THE CLUB signed quarterbacks Kelly Stouffer and Doug Pederson, tight end Rob Coons and wide receiver Demeris Johnson on Friday.

Of the four free agents, only Stouffer has extensive NFL experience. Stouffer, a first-round pick by the Phoenix Cardinals in 1987, sat out his first season in a contract dispute and then played five season with Seattle. Stouffer, 29, played in 22 games, starting 16, completing 225 of 437 passes for 2,333 yards, with seven touchdowns and 19 interceptions. In 1993, he had a tryout with the Cincinnati Bengals but did not get a contract and did not play.

Pederson, 26, last year played seven games for Miami but had no starts. He completed 4 of 8 passes for 41 yards.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

CENTER JAY Hilgenberg had a minor heart attack, but after a procedure to clear clogged arteries, he “feels great,” a suburban Chicago cardiologist said. Whether he will be back on the football field again is up to him, “but it would not be my recommendation,” said Dr. Jay Alexander, a cardiologist treating the player.

Hilgenberg, 35, checked into Lake Forest Hospital on Monday when bothered by chest pains and nausea at his home in suburban Chicago. Alexander said he expected Hilgenberg to be released from the hospital today.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS

THE CLUB is negotiating seriously with San Diego Chargers free agent John Friesz, the quarterback’s agent said. Leigh Steinberg said the two sides are discussing a 1-year deal worth between $900,000 and $1 million. Friesz, 26, became San Diego’s starter in 1991, but injured a knee the next season and lost the job to Stan Humphries. Friesz was a backup again last season.
