NFL player Evan Rodriguez, of North Bergen, cited in dispute with cops in Florida: report

Current NFL football player and former North Bergen High School star Evan Rodriguez was charged with disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer in Miami Beach early Thursday morning, an NBC affiliate reported.

NBC reported that Rodriguez, 24, formerly of North Bergen, was in a car that got into an accident early Thursday morning at t he intersection of 6th Street and Alton Road in Miami Beach. When officers asked for his identification for a traffic report, Rodriguez questioned officers, saying he is an NFL player, according to the report.

Rodriguez eventually gave police his identification, but remained indignant toward officers.

As officers were speaking with the driver, Rodriguez allegedly kept walking toward an officer, and would not listen to officer's requests to stay on the sidewalk, the report said.

Rodriguez was quoted as saying, "I don't need this. I'm an NFL player," the NBC report said.

Authorities noticed Rodriguez had slurred speech, bloodshot and watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, NBC reported. After screaming at the driver and then the investigating officers, Rodriguez was arrested and charged with disorderly intoxication and resisting an officer, the report states.

Police told the NBC reporter that Rodriguez was not the driver at the time of the accident.

Rodriguez was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played quarterback and safety at North Bergen High School, then safety for a short stint at West Virginia. After his freshman year, Rodriguez transferred to Temple University.

In 2008, Rodriguez was charged with a disturbance and trespassing charge after an alleged physical altercation with a female residence hall advisor while in West Virginia.
