The Venice International Film Festival, the world’s oldest major film event, on Thursday laid out the plans for its 73rd edition, with a host of major names among the 55 features due to descend upon the historic Italian city next month.
Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals is among the biggest titles set to screen in competition, with the Los Angeles-set thriller’s stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams expected to attend. The film will compete alongside Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi pic Arrivals, giving Adams double duties on the red carpet, plus Emir Kusturica’s On the Milky Road and Terence Malick’s Cate Blanchett-fronted documentary Voyage of Time. Audiences also will get to see the film that brought Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander together, Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans, as well as Natalie Portman’s turn as Jackie Onassis in Pablo Lorraine’s biopic Jackie.
The unlikely trio of Jason Momoa, Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves may drop by the Venice Lido for the premiere of The Bad Batch, Ana Lily Amirpour’s follow up to her critically acclaimed debut A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and described as “a post-apocalyptic cannibal love story set in a Texas wasteland.” Also in the running for the Golden Lion will be Martin Koolhoven’s Brimstone, starring Dakota Fanning, Kit Harington and Guy Pearce. As has been previously announced, the festival will open with Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, which also will compete.
Out of competition, the event will close with Antoine Fuqua’s all-star remake of The Magnificent Seven. Mel Gibson’s WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge also will screen, as will Philippe Falardeau’s The Bleeder, starring Liev Schrieber, Naomi Watts and Elisabeth Moss. Another actress likely to have repeat red-carpet appearances is Portman, who stars alongside Lily-Rose Depp in Rebecca Zlotowski’s Planetarium, which is being given a special out-of-competition screening.
The fest is set to run Aug. 31-Sept 10.
