The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Revenant scored a leading three nominations Monday as the competition for the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards was unveiled.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s survival thriller will compete in the best film category against Todd McCarthy’s Spotlight and George Miller’s action pic Mad Max: Fury Road. DiCaprio is up for best actor against Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Inarritu will also square off in the best director category against Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road and Todd Haynes for Carol. The best actress nominations go to Cate Blanchett for Carol, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn and Brie Larson for Room.
Elsewhere, the best supporting actor competition will pit Mark Rylance of Bridge of Spies against Michael Shannon for 99 Homes and Sylvester Stallone for Creed. And there’s two best supporting actress nominations for Alicia Vikander for her star turns in The Danish Girl? and Ex Machina, while a third went to Jennifer Jason Leigh for The Hateful Eight.
The best screenplay nominations go to Charlie Kaufman for Anomalisa, Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy for Spotlight and Emma Donoghue for Room. Room, a Canada-Ireland co-production, also leads the Canadian film competition with a slew of nominations, including one for best picture, another for Lenny Abrahamson for best director and a third for Emma Donoghue for best screenplay.
Room also earns Larson a best Canadian film actress nomination, while Vancouver-based Jacob Tremblay is nominated for best Canadian film actor and Joan Allen is up for best supporting actress in a Canadian film. Room will face off against Guy Maddin and Evan Johnson’s The Forbidden Room and Andrew Cividino’s Sleeping Giant for best Canadian film.
Vancouver film scribes last year named Richard Linklater’s Boyhood as the best film of 2014. Winners of the international film categories will be announced on Dec. 21.
