Brazil continue golden reign with third world crown

FIVB President Wei presents Giba and Brazil the 2010 FIVB Men's World Championship trophy.

Rome, Italy, October 10, 2010 - Brazil captured their third consecutive FIVB Men's World Championship title after defeating Cuba in straight sets on Sunday evening in Rome, Italy. It seemed like a practice game for Brazil, who overwhelmed the young Cuban team to take home their third World Championship in row with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-22 victory.

It was the moment of truth. The old versus the new. Experience against physical strength. Brazil versus Cuba in the gold-medal match at the Palalottomatica in front of 11,605 fans. Coach Bernardo Rezende’s starting line-up for Brazil confirmed the regulars: Bruno Rezende, Leandro Vissotto, Murilo Endres, Rodrigo Santana, Lucas Saatkamp, Dante Amaral and libero Da Silva. For Cuba coach Orlando Samuel Blackwood went for Wilfredo Leon, Yoandy Leal, Roberto Camejo, Robertlandy Simon, Raydel Hierrezuelo and Fernando Hernandez.

Vissotto was top scorer in the match with 19 points, converting 57 percent of his attacks into points. Amaral added eight points to the victory. Bruno set Brazil to a 54 percent conversion rate on attacks, as the team had just 11 hitting miscues. Cuba were paced by Leon's 15 points, while Leal added nine in the defeat. Brazil held an 8-4 advantage in blocks and took advantage of 27 Cuban errors.

Murilo Endres served to open the match, with Leandro Vissotto attacking to bring the score to 2-1 before a high-powered ace made it 5-2. Simon counter-attacked to bring the score to 6-3, but Brazil aced another serve thanks to Dante Amaral and went to the first technical timeout at 8-3. It almost seemed like child’s play for Rezende’s team who blocked through Lucas Saatkamp, Amaral and Bruno Mossa Rezende, and attacked with Vissotto in exceptional form. Cuba had difficulty in reception but made up for it with great spiking moves by Leal and Simon. With the score 21-18 to Brazil, Fernando Hernandez catapaulted an ace over the net to make the score 21-19. However the final point of the set belonged to Vissotto as Bratil closed it at 25-22. Vissotto notched six points for Brazil, while top scorer for Cuba was 17-year-old Leon with five.

The second set got underway with a devastating Brazilian surge. They took a 7-1 lead, helped in part by many errors on service and a negative blocking system on Cuba’s part. Simon responded well even though it was close to impossible to beat the Brazilian blocking machine. Cuba made an attempt to inch their way back into the match, but their low success rate in attack of 36 percent did not make life easy for Blackwood’s team. Amaral blocked the Cuban attack and brought the score to 24-14, with Vissotto closing the second set once again at 25-14.

Cuba garnered some courage and determination to temporarily tie the score at 7-7 at the beginning of the third set but the first technical timeout saw Brazil in the lead with an 8-7 advantage. Leon's phenomenal attacks, which earned him nine points in the set, made no difference to the outcome as Cuba‘s low reception rate of 36 percent could not make ends meet. Brazil's powerhouse block, with Santana, Bruno and Murilo, called the shots. With the score 24-22, Vissotto spiked a bullet which landed in the middle of the opponent’s court to deliver the title of world champions 2010 to Brazil.
