Stoke boss Tony Pulis has signed Danny Higginbotham from Southampton for an initial £225,000 fee.
The 27-year-old defender turned down an improved contract at St Mary's and was placed on the transfer list.
He has now signed a three-year deal with Stoke and told their website: "There seems to be great optimism around the club about the future."
Pulis said: "We have been working six weeks to get this deal done and we are delighted it has now been completed."
He added: "Danny is a player with a lot of qualities. He's played in the Premiership and has previously been involved in two moves totalling £3.5m, so to get him for an initial fee of £225,000 is really good value.
"He's done a pre-season, he's fit, and he will go straight into our squad for the game against Southend on Saturday."
