Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has been named the sexiest person in history - beating partner Brad Pitt into third place.

The Oscar-winning star, who has three children, was ahead of late singer Elvis Presley in second place.

Screen legend Marilyn Monroe and singer Beyonce Knowles completed the top five.

The full countdown, based on an internet poll, was revealed on Channel 4's The 100 Greatest Sex Symbols programme on Saturday.

Lara Croft - the video game character who was played on the big screen by Jolie - was sixth in the poll and the only fictional character inside the top 10.

George Clooney was in seventh place, followed by Kylie Minogue at eight.

Johnny Depp
Depp has had huge success with the Pirates of the Caribbean films

Clooney was named sexiest man alive in a poll by US magazine People last year.

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp was in ninth place in the poll, with fellow Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson at 10.

Pitt, 43, and Jolie, 31, first met on the set of the film Mr & Mrs Smith in 2005.

Pitt later split from wife Jennifer Aniston and went on to adopt Jolie's two children, whom she had previously adopted from Cambodia and Ethiopia.

Jolie gave birth to their first biological child, Shiloh Nouvel, in Namibia last May.
