解説 Welcome to Aizu-Wakamatsu! Naoko's hometown. The crown jewell of this place is Tsurugajo - the Castle of the Crane. Naoko and I walked to the castle today. She pretty much grew up around this place. Not only is it the center of town, but her dad was in charge of city parks and his office was on the castle grounds. He likes to say he built the castle - heh heh - but there is a grain of truth to that statement. He helped renovate Tsurugajo and restored the grounds, turning it into a musem. It's a great place to visit not only for the history, not only for seeing the castle itself, which is very iconic and just what you'd imagine a Japanese castle to be, but it's also a fun place to visit to see the beautiful mountains and town of Aizu-Wakamatsu itself. Perched high aloft the 5-6 story castle you can see a massive volcano in the not far enough distance, many other surrounding mountains, and just about any building in town. You can also see some beautifully colorful hangings of thousands of oregami cranes. People have hung them on the shrine at the Castle of the Crane as prayers. After we spent the afternoon at the castle Naoko and I went to Uniqlo to buy sweatpants. Good times.
