Bob Dylan- sex symbol?

Post by Mrpinksgirl » Wed September 21st, 2005, 17:48 UTC

I began listening to Bob a while ago, but here lately I find myself obsessing over him. I think he is just rediculously sexy. I go to his concerts and get overly excited!
I know it all started when I first heard him speak "It's Halloween, I've got my Bob Dylan mask on" and I thought that was cute. Next, it was hearing him laugh; that just drove me crazy. Then I saw Pennebakers work.... I so wanted to be that little hussy that was under his hotel window that got up to his room. I just wanted to smack the girl when she said she didn't like Sub Homesick Blues. Then Dylan said she was "One of those kind of girls."
I thought he's smart, great voice, cute, funny, talented, and has a dark & mysterious side. I WANT YOU, I NEED YOU, OH BABY, OH BABY!
Now with all this stuff on NDH...... I am in 7th heaven! WooHoo!! He is sooooooo sexy!!!!! Those eyes.........that voice.........
only one regret about NDH.........I wish Bob would have BIT the sunglasses!!

Yahoo! I KNOW everyone's rolling ther eyes and thinking of course I'd post the first reply......well, close your eyes if you don't like it! Go and post about his sunglasses/balls/eating habits/toenail situation.

My poor girl. I'm in the same boat. I think he's the sexiest man who's ever lived. He's too, too perfect for me, I'm a poetry and music freak who loves her men. Only, now I don't like men anymore. Or rather, I can't bring myself to care too much. This man has ruined me! I can't take normal guys seriously anymore. It's incurable -I mean, if I fancy the heck out of him at 64, when I'm 18 and by rights should be after bright young things, even Paul Newman in his prime wouldn't make me bat an eyelid.
Sigh. It does mean that I don't get so worked up when relationships end, and I'm never fussed about being single for long periods of time.

Oh dear. I should stop. This is probably IDIOTIC reading.

OK...just got rebut that infatuated juvenile comment...Trust me...I so wish I was still a juvenille, all though I wouldn't trade the wisdom for the youth...but, ahem.....lets get back to the sex and desire for Bob.....Get used to it ladies....it will never go away.....been in love with Bob since I was a dewey teen and still am, in love that is....No wonder none of my relationships worked out...Of course, I always forewarned them that I would leave them for Bob.....so they would get a little nervous whenever Bob came to town or I would take the Ramones off the stereo and put Bob on  AAAHHH...fond memories.....

So take a number girls...its a long line awaitin' to bed Bob

although i have said this many a time...of course any girl would think of him this way!

i think he is the sexiest most attractive man to walk on the earth! he is just so perfect...those amazing blue eyes...his wonderful hair...his nose! everything physically about him..not to mention the way he writes...sings... plays...he is so expressive!

about the whole old thing...he looks WONDERFUL now too...and he is still the most amazing thing to ever walk the earth!

i was tlaking to my friend who said that nobody thinks he is gorgeous because of his age..and how i am crazy now for thinking so and in the future nobody will think so( iw as talking about how my cousin looks like Bob as a child...so maybe he will look like him as an adult, when he is an adult..and therefore be able to score alot of chicks) so therefore my theory would be wrong. but back to my point...people will always think this of Bob because he is ageless...i will introduce him to my kids...and i am sre many others will do so...

it is just plain and simple...it must be known...forget all the male models and hollister boys...BOB IS THE REAL SEX GOD!!

I really should tell you off Welshbastard, but you're absolutely right. If they had virtual sick bags I'd send everyone one whenever I get into my bobsessive phases. You'll just have to put up with me, I'm afraid....you're new here, you'll get used to avoiding my posts like the plague like everyone else.

More than ever, after watching Bob in NDH, I gotta agree: Bob has got it going on. I don't know if he--or any other human--is a 'sex symbol', but Bob's got it going on. He's a human who radiates.

He radiates yin and yang. A whole persona. Inner light. Aura. Vibe. Wit. Articulate intelligence. Soulfulness.

Okay, besides all the Enya-isms above, he's got the prettiest eyes. Damn.

I've never understood 'hunkiness' in terms of masculine appeal. It would be like wrassling with The Incredible Hulk on sandpaper sheets. One of the reasons I pay little attention to so many modern bands is because so many boys in them have that shaved-head tattoed 'Enraged Ex-Con Biker Sumo Wrestler On Steroids w/Noserings' look.

Sorry fellas: All I ever think is "oh they shaved their heads to disguise a receding hairline" and "If their nosering isn't in, does snot blow out of the piercing-hole sideways, like a whale spuming, when they blow their nose?

I like rangy guys. Guys who got a lot of femininity and a natural masculine prettiness to them (not like some 'glam rock' thing). I think of rockers like (the young) Dee Dee Ramone, Tom Verlaine, Tim Buckley, Keith Richards. You ever seen the young John Cale on the cover of his 'Paris 1919' recording? THAT look. John still looks good. Fred Smith (RIP) of the MC5. Iggy Pop.

There's a great musician from detroit named Robert Gillespie--I met him a few years back, and immediately daydreams of sitting around some motor city apartment, cooking for my man while wearing something see-through, filled all cells in my brain, body and nether regions. Claudette, Lady B, all you ER gals, you wanna see? Go here, though most of the shots are of him making goofy guitar-ecstacy faces: http://www.motorcityjams.com/gillespie.html

Bob Dylan got that vibe in spades. Always did, still does. Quote from Rimbaud: "Lithe Son Of Pan"

Too many modern guys are on some kind of last-ditch "I'LL SHOW 'EM MY PECS AND THEN GO SHOOT PEOPLE IN IRAQ" he-man trip. Guys: It's SO last century, so 90's. Sorry: the only folks I know who go 100% apeshit over that look are gay bottom-boys in leather drag cruising the West Side Highway dives. (Or the gals from "Sex And The City" but them girls are fictional and, besides, they're basically drag queens portrayed by real women.) Okay, I know some girls really dig that vibe but I can't help it if some folks mistook Barbie and GI Joe for Role Models.

Life contradicts words: My last BF was kinda chubby. Beef and beer and body-armor. He played in a truly dreary 'prog rock' cover-songs bar-band down in Philly, one of those bands with a damned Hobbity Logo on the drums. But he was goofy and sweet and fun. All-night pajama parties. His spirit WAS sweet and boyish, though his bod and physical vibe verged on Ozzy-hood. It gets better: his dad was a preacher. Call me Dusty Springfield. He fell in love with crack pipes so I bid him adieu.

Bob is rangy and lithe. His close-up face in NDH reveals the residue of many true-grins and laughter through the years. It also reveals a human who is no stranger to weeping. Every wrinkle has been earned honestly and they have enhanced him, not diminished him. Look at Dick Cheney. Same age as Bob. The VP got the kind of wrinkles which come from being big bossman with bottom line eye sockets.

The mocking words posted by some fellas in this thread are interesting. If we were discussing a talented female, they'd willingly write "Oh yeah, besides her great songs, she's SO good-looking." But so would the gals!

I guess testosterone causes Beautastigmatism, wherin beauty can only be seen and recognized if perched atop 3" heels--UNDER PENALTY OF THE COOTIE LAWS!.

But fellas, consider this: when you attend a Bob concert, or sit staring at the cover of a fave male musician's disc, or get way-into a magazine's photo-spread about some great new band, this is what you're doing, along with what else you're also doing:

You're staring with EXTREME interest at another male. Usually a good-looking male. It doesn't mean you're gay. It doesn't mean you're weird. It just means you're digging beauty. The socially-sanctioned context makes it 'okay' but doesn't negate what you're actually doing.

I believe it was the critic Robert Christgau who once wrote that rock stardom and pro sports functioned, in part, as a social 'pressure valve' wherein it was okay for straight males to dig other males without risking sissy status or dreaded Homo-hood. He specifically cited Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA" cover. Bruce's ass, tight jeans, hanky in back pocket.
Like some West Village hustler. Rough Trade.

Here in the states, especially here in Jersey, Bruce has a rabid following among 'good old boys'--the 'regular everyday working guys': "YO!--Bruce is like us--a regular guy, he's da Boss".

I had a friend like that. I told him about Christgau's theory. He got FURIOUS. Red in the face. Precisely as if I'd stated that only gays dug Springsteen.

This from a guy--a married straight guy--whose apartment walls were covered with sexy close-up posters of Bruce.

Oh well. Anyway Bob is dang pretty. Boy pretty. Old man pretty. Jimmy Stewart pretty. Lined and roadproven pretty. Knows how to laugh pretty. Takes a train to cry pretty (is that like 'Mark Train?:) )

And pretty is pretty sexy. Go ask Floyd the bandit, the Pretty Boy one.

So I watched NDH. There's Bob. There's Dave Van Ronk. I love both their musical outputs. But I can't imagine snuggling on the loveseat with ol' Dave or zooming down some county road with him in a pickup truck at 2 am, country music blasting from the radio. I can't imagine it with Peter or Paul. Maybe Mary, but she looks like those glued-on flowers people used to stick on the bottom of bathtubs to keep from slipping on the hair conditioner slime. Bruce Langhorne: maybe/possibly. But Bob: definitely. MOST definitely.

It ain't just guys: Patti Smith, as an obvious example, has a LOT of the vibe Bob radiates, but from a girl body. Chrissie Hynde too. Whatever it is, it's precious. It's like some folks are willing to be full-time professional humans while many opt for part-time amateur status.

Scaredy-cats!

Thank you, for dignifying yet another topic, queenjane.

Bob dug Patti too -they were called the "Two Bobs" when they hung out together after all. Just look at these pics -it's as if Bob was looking at himself and liking what he saw.....liking as you said, Queenie, the vibe

Hiya Lady B.

I've read that Bob early-on recognised a kindred spirit in Patti and he was also very helpful when she was suddenly widowed. Invited her to tour with him.

As a musician I've been fortunate to meet some others who have that vibe. Some are boys, some gals. You know it when you see it.

Shirley Manson a few years back. Many from the NYC punk scene. Willie Nile. Poets like Jim Carroll.

I've come face-to-face with Patti twice. In about '76, she and the boys were looking for a new keyboardist. I had long-dug her writing and now was into her music. I played mediocre keyboard but figured 'what the heck!'. So I walk into a room and there's Patti. I had perceived SOMETHING via her writings and recordings, but never in-person before. Something I'd also perceived in Bob, in Tim Buckley, and in The Incredible String Band--before they got too precious. A complete and simple humaness? An awareness that was very open? A sense of Grace, which encompasses 'gracefulness' but goes WAY beyond that?

That meeting with Patti, brief tho it was, shook me up--in a good way--and it literally took about 12 years before I totally understood the shake-up and what it might've meant. I'd had no awareness of poets or poetry before that moment. Poetry had just been something you got-through in class.
I wasn't aware that my worn-out 45 of 'Gates Of Eden' had anything to do with poetry or poets.

But Patti radiated something similar to what had long affected me via Bob's 'Gates Of Eden.' From that day on, reading became a different experience. Any song I'd 'write' after that had NOTHING to do with riffs, rhymes or trends. I began to try to figure out how to write about what I was actually thinking, about my life. And discovered that almost nothing was what I'd thought it was.

A few years ago I played guitar, accompanying a poet, at NYC's 'Poetry Project At St. Mark's Church'. Their big New Years' Day Poetry Marathon. Patti performed that day, but so did about 200 other people. Besides reading a great prose-poem, she'd played a very cool clarinet improvisation. The place was jammed. It wasn't like sitting around some tiny dressing room. I was leaving and went to fetch my guitar case. Someone was squatting in front of my case, talking to a little kid. They stood up and turned around. It was Patti. She and I were eyeball to eyeball. We're the same height.

I blurted "You were wonderful." That's all. Patti didn't say anything. Just looked. I was thinking of her clarinet playing. I felt TOTALLY idiotic because it had happened so quick and so out-of-the-blue. One part of me wished I'd only said "excuse me, I gotta get my guitar case". But another part was glad I said what I did. She manifested the spirit, the muse, and radiated light that day. Expressing appreciation to others is good. IMO. Even if blurted like a kid.

Whenever we encounter such folks, keep all eyes and ears wide open. They're everywhere. It has nothing to do with fame or music or anything except radiance. Some are in your town, right now. Some don't sing or write. Some are 12, some are 30, others 82. You might be one. Who knows?

But when you meet one, pay attention, easily and openly. It's human time in these Reptile Days!

Well, I'm lost for words. Patti's my hero -it sounds as if she more than lives up to how highly I look up to her. And psssh about gushing your admiration -just look at Bob's face in that photo --he's entranced, just as you were.

It has nothing to do with fame or music or anything except radiance. Some are in your town, right now. Some don't sing or write. Some are 12, some are 30, others 82.

After your writing, Queenjane, the only appropriate response is Bob's:

"There are no words that need to be said"

Bob's sexiness has magical transference powers too. I once went with a girl that I showed the San Francisco Press conference to. When those tight shots of him come up towards the end (check it out girls- more lubricious opportunities await you), and he flicks cigarette ash on himself, she became putty in my hands.....

I will not deny that in 65-66 he was ultra cool. But I dont get the women who thinks Robert Plant is a sex symbol nowadays either. He's horribly wrinkly.

Amen, Whoopie. Plant looks like he's perpetually in some bizarre mid-life crisis hell. "Am I still a RAWKER or now Gandalf The Fitness Guru?" Oh, oh oh oh, aiiiieeeeee. Oh. D'ya like me ringlets? D'ya?" Say 'O' if ya do, luv!"

Saw him on 'Austin City Limits' and it looked like some kind of Bizarro World Info-mercial for The Stadium Generation Super-Oldies Collection! 3 easy payments of only $19.95 each! (plus shipping and warlock taxes.)

I love the Berra interview queenjane. By the way, does The San Francisco Press Conference pop up in NDH? So many great moments in that:

'How do you explain your attraction?'
'My attraction to what?'

'How would you define folk music?'
'How would I define folk music? As a constitutional replay of mass-production (totally straight-faced)'
'Are your songs folk songs?'
'I guess...if they're a constitutional replay of mass-production'.

'Mr Dylan, you seem to be bemused by the fact that you are a popular entertainer, and you are a most popular entertainer'.
'Well, what do you want me exactly to do, jump up, say 'Hallelujah', and crash the cameras? If I can't go along with you, i'll find someone to go along with you?'
'No, but you almost seemed embaressed'.
'I'm not embaressed...but you know, it happened, like anything happens. You don't explain happenings, you dig happenings'.

'What are you thinking about right now?'
'I'm thinking about this ash'.

'It's almost like you're doing a kind of penance...of silence'.
Nooo...no penance...it's always silent where I am'

'Who is Mr Jones?'
'Mr Jones? I'm not going to tell you his first name. I'd get sued'.
What does he do?'
'He's a pin-boy. He also wears suspenders.'

'If you ever sold out, what would it be to?'
'Ladies undergarments'.

'What hopes do you have for the future, and what changes do do you see?'
'Ooooh...I don't have any hopes...for the future...and the only thing I'd want would be enough shirts to change'.

'Do you have a final message?'
'Good luck'
'Your songs don't say that'
Oh yes they do. Every song tails off with 'Good Luck, I hope you make it'.

Bob Spoken. It's an essential accessory to my Bob wardrobe, and I just luuurve to get it out, and try it on in front of the mirror girls. Rush out and get yours today.
