Departmental Bulletin Paper

Speaking generally, we recognize that when a woman conceives a child she may suddenly start eating many pickled plums and other sour foods. This means the morning sickness has already begun. Everyone wants to know the sex of children before they are born. Divining the child's sex has been transmitted from olden times. It is an old custom of Japan for pregnant women to bind themselves with a maternity belt. In binding with the belt some women put bear's bowels iniside the binding. Others put in a sloughed-off snakeskin. Many pregnant women feel that if they don't keep various taboos, their fetus will suffer injury.
