PRESS STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON DEVELOPMENTS IN UKRAINE
Malaysia views with deep concern developments in Ukraine, in particular the situation in the Crimean peninsula.
Given Malaysia’s friendly relations with Russia and Ukraine, we urge both countries to work towards a peaceful resolution of the issues between them. We hope both sides would adopt a moderate approach and find a mutually acceptable solution. The interest, welfare and security of the people of Ukraine must be given top-most priority while taking into account the implications on the overall stability and peace in the region.
Malaysia also supports all peaceful efforts including international diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the crisis situation in Ukraine. All parties involved must respect the rule of law, act responsibly and aim towards finding a peaceful settlement.
Malaysia through its Embassy of Malaysia in Kiev will continue to monitor the developments in Ukraine closely.
As of now, all Malaysians in Ukraine are reported to be safe. Malaysians have been advised to avoid certain areas namely, the Crimea region and Independence Square (Maidan) in central Kiev. Malaysians residing in Ukraine are also advised to follow the security guidelines issued by the Embassy of Malaysia in Kiev and the local authorities as well as to restrict their movements.
