The Top Ten Times Mortal Kombat Went Wrong

If you thought the movie was bad, check out these embarrassing moments.

Continued (page 2 of 2)

  • Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero Live-Action Cutscenes

Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero Live-Action Cutscenes

Sub-Zero's 1997 spin-off would have been totally forgettable if it weren't for the concentrated nuggets of unintentional hilarity sandwiched between every single level. This mediocre brawler took Mortal Kombat's digitized actors concept to the next logical step for its cutscenes, combining green-screened footage of real actors with CG backgrounds. Basically, the whole production looked like a bunch of guys in bad Halloween costumes hanging out inside the game Myst. Extra special thanks to the genius who decided to apply the "anonymous witness" voice filter over all of Raiden and Quan Chi's lines.

  • Mortal Kombat: Live Tour

    Mortal Kombat: Live Tour

Much like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' "Coming Out of Their Shells" tour several years earlier, the 1995 Mortal Kombat Live Tour was a nationwide stage show that featured costumed actors performing choreographed fights and dance numbers. No, seriously -- this really happened. Other than a few promo shots and an awkward segment on a local newscast, however, very little footage of the Live Tour exists on the internet. That leaves those of us who never attended the stage shows very little indication of what this thing was actually like. Then again, this bitchin' denim jacket from the tour's souvenir shop tells as much of a story as any first-hand account.

  • Mortal Kombat Dance Music

    Mortal Kombat Dance Music

Belgian electronica duo The Immortals made junior-high dances even more unbearable than usual when they released "Techno Syndrome" -- better known as the Mortal Kombat theme song. This diabolically catchy track fused in-game audio clips with the toe-tappin' sounds of a man violently convulsing atop a synthesizer. Not only is it an awful song, it also has crazy staying power; "Techno Syndrome" still makes the playlist at just about every major sporting event to this day. If you take into account the ratings for this year's Super Bowl alone, the number of people who were involuntarily exposed to the Mortal Kombat anthem in the last month would easily dwarf the entire population of Germany.

  • Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

    Mortal Kombat: Rebirth

By most accounts, this fan-made short film was pretty awesome -- so awesome, in fact, that it landed director Kevin Tancharoen a job working on the upcoming web series. So why should anyone be worried about the new web show if the unofficial teaser was so great? Go ahead and Google "Loonatics Unleashed" if you're curious what happened the last time Warner Bros. whipped up an edgy reboot of a classic franchise. Just be sure to bring a shovel -- you'll need it to bury the smoldering remains of your childhood.

  • Kurtis Stryker

    Kurtis Stryker

Mortal Kombat characters literally live and die by their supernatural abilities -- Stryker's special power is that he has a gun and a stupid name. Worse yet, the guy looks like Uncle Joey from Full House wearing a backwards cap. Sure, maybe he's not a great fit for a list of failed television shows and crappy merchandise, but that's assuming Stryker actually belongs anywhere at all. He doesn't.

When it is it going to dawn on you people that Mortal Kombat just isn't good?  The game itself has always been difficult to approach for the casual fighting fan and yet easy to master for the pattern spammers, which assured me back in the 90s that I'd get get running-combo'd to death the moment I plop a quarter into MK3 and some little dip shit decided to challenge me.

Back then, the term "dial-a-combo" was all that needed to be said to express exactly why Mortal Kombat always was and always will be totally lame.

None of you care?!? That figures.

I can still remember some of those cut-scenes. I was like watching somebody get hurt. You know it's bad and it sucks, but it's to funny to look away.

I'm a MK fan since the first one was in the arcades and I'm really excited for the new one coming out. I think if this new game wasn't made for a mature audience the franchise would be dead.

Lol stryker doesn't have a machine gun, he has a pistol. I love MK but i have to say you're the fist person i've heard defend Stryker. Sure he can shoot you, taser you and lob grenades but the other characters can set you on fire, steal your soul, pull you into hell and freeze you solid. It's just that Stryker seemed kind of mundane compaired to all the other characters and never relly felt as strong. Hell even Sonya can shoot blasts of energy at you.

Did Hasbro make the first MK action figures?  I cannot find their logo branded anywhere on any of the packaging I've seen.  I know they were like G.I. Joe figures (which themselves had a Street Fighter II sub-line), as far as size, sculpt, and maybe articulation go, but were they really from the same company?

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  Griever2112

While I will agree a million percent with Annihilation, some of the stuff on here I do agree with, the GI Joe figures were lame, as well as the cartoon and live tour and Stryker did kinda suck I never read the comics. The cut scene for Mythologies, you need to look at the times, it was something a lot of games did. As for the disagrees Conquest and Rebirth. Conquest was a good series, its problem was lack of exposure and its time slot sucked, the only time I ever saw it on was after WCW Nitro, monday nights. Rebirth, I loved the reimaging and "trailer" and if it stick with this theme I am more than willing to give the web series a shot, and I'm looking forward to it.

  • VDKT
  • Marketting a product for kids always ruins a franchise!

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  VDKT

When a game or any franchise was intended for adults, then it needs to STAY THAT WAY!!!  There's nothing wrong with mature teenagers buying adult games... heck I played MK1 to MK3 as a teen, but as long as their parents know about it.  My parents knew I wasn't retarded and wouldn't replicate what I see in a video game on other people, hence the reason they allowed me to play violent video games throughout all my youth.  But some kids are stupid, and those are the children that should not be allowed to even be anywhere near a video game console!!!

This is why I'm hoping that the new Mortal Kombat game is gonna rock!  It's ultra violent, it's for adults-only!  No teenagers should be allowed to buy this game without a parent next to them!  If that's the case, this game will rule the fighting game market like how Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 did in the old days!

  • Sumez
  • The Immortals

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  Sumez

For the record, "The Immortals" is basically the duo/trio known as both Praga Khan and Lords of Acid, and a bunch of different new beat acts during their early years.

They are excellent and very talented producers, not taking themselves too seriously. And sure, the Mortal Kombat theme is really cheesy, but it's also totally awesome in its own way, and very self aware.
Calling this track a "mistake" is by far the worst mistake of this list.
Sure, it might easily not be your taste, but a lot of people love the track if only for it's cheesy retro value, and it definitely helped market the Mortal Kombat franchise more than anything else, possible including the actual games.

I'd say the first three or four MK games is probably a bigger mistake than a lot of what is mentioned here. People might have fond memories of them, or at least the blood in them, but they are truly terrible games, and just about every fighting game made at the same time is better and has infinitely more depth. Just take Street Fighter II which pretty much gave birth to the genre (yeah, there's a SF1, but it's a very different game), that is still a very good game that has aged extremely well, even in the graphics department.

  • I just came to this site and have a few things to bring to the table.

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  Katsabas

Hating the theme song is bound to attract attention but not the pleasant kind of attention. The theme is in such harmony with the tone of the game. You cannot think of one without the other. Not liking the theme means that either you are new to the MK scene or that you don't like MK in general.

And putting the Rebirth miniseries on the list before a single episode is released? You know, people cringed when they found out Michael Keaton was to be the latest Batman. And the movie turned out pretty good.

I do not really get the feeling he knows what he is writing about since things like MK vs DC, Special Forces and replacing blood with sweat in NES are nowhere to be found on this list.

Fortunately the next game is on quite a respectable track. The demo is amazing and it is much faster than the last 10 years of entries. Not MVC fast but not the curmudgeon misery thats been force-fed to the fans. Nearly all of the classic trilogy characters and none of the absurd MK 4-Deception new characters (Dairou, Kobra(KEN, really!?!?!?), Darrius, Reiko...) For all the misteps of the franchise, this next installment has already secured me as a day of release purchaser--And aside from a used copy of Armageddon for the memories, I havent bought an MK since Gold. Personally I like MK and SF equally. Both bring different things to the table though admittedly MK has a more dubious track record.

First of all, I do agree that Mortal Kombat have and always will have its problems duo to so many people involved in the franchise, but this editor is pointing out HIS POINT OF VIEW towards the franchise instead of relaying on the general consensus.

EVERYONE KNOWS THAT IF THERE'S SOMETHING THAT MADE MORTAL KOMBAT POPULAR AMONG THE GENERAL POPULATION WAS THE THEME SONG....AND THIS EDITOR STATES THAT IT'S ONE OF MORTAL KOMBAT'S WORSE MISTAKES??  What is this guy smoking?

I mean I could go on the entire day pointing out that this guy is a Mortal Kombat hater based on his writting, but also let's not forget that he didn't even scratch the surface with MK problems.  Him instead of picking on things that are not true, why didn't he mention the REAL MK Mistakes based on number of sales and market failures such the infamous MK Special Forces for the PS1, or what about the fact that since Jon Tobias left the team the franchise became more of a misfire than a success, causing core characters to have name changes and weird pair ups, such case of smoke/noob.

Anyways, and these are the people that are suppose to be objective on their writting?

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  milkman_v1

Except that Mortal Kombat Advance needed a spot SOMEWHERE.

I will stick up for the first movie though. The fights were well-chereographed, the casting very solid, and the script was wittier than it had any right to be. The second though is about as bad as cinema can get; it's like a SyFy original movie somehow found its way to theaters, only it's no fun to laugh at, only the realization of sadness when wasting 90 minutes of your life with it.

Stryker is a tough one; on one hand, as far as actual gameplay goes, he's a god in the right hands in MK3/UMK3. On the other hand...that is not only bottom-of-the-barrel character design (should I be the awesome ninja or Uncle Joey: Mall Cop?), but then they had to dress an actor in said bad-character-design garb....looks-wise, he's the Bubsy of fighting game characters.

He was pretty cool, he was basically Johnny Cage in MK3 since Johnny Cage was killed off in the movie. I don't really agree with the list, Annihilation was alright but not as good as Mortal Kombat at least MK seemed better when it came to the story and the actors in it.

I agree Stryker was awesome! And though he looks like a bike cop, the guy ran around with Grenades. What cop carries grenades and applies them liberally to the forces of evil? Sounds like a super hero to me.

    Posted: userComment.createdDate by  gamerlegend73

Threshhold Entertainment never released Mortal Kombat Conquest on dvd and I will never understand as to why not! This is what I hate about these big honchos & producer's They have a tv show but then they never release the series on Dvd! Seriously what were you moron's thinking! If its popular release it on Dvd!

I also can't believe how long it takes them to finally decide to release the cartoons from my generation on dvd Anyone remember KID VIDEO? its been absent for over 25 years as we speak very disappointing. Now its just like Conquest only available in the UK and Europe!..

And Jesus, Broken H, I don't even know where to begin with you. Annihilation was a satire like The Room is a black comedy.

It was an indirect satire. (aka unintentional) You can tell it was trying to hype up marketing to milk a  popular product but it's failure in doing so was laugh-out-loud funny. Or you can take everything super seriously. Your choice!

You can like Annihilation if you're high or simply in the mood for one of those silly movies that ends up as a satire of Holly Wood despite taking itself seriously. lol.

Sure, MK can be cheesy but so was everything else I loved from my child hood. (And I love the techno MK theme song to this day)

The first movie was pretty good in my opinion. As video game to film adaptations go it's one of the very few decent transitions.

My favorite moments in the series were MK 2, Shaolin Monks, and Deception. I'm also more eager about MK 9 than I am over MvC3. I know that labels me as clinically insane but stop to consider the newest MK will likely have more modes, a better story line, and is hearkening back to the days before the franchise started sucking. Heck, even MK vs. DC looked as if it had promise. I'll pick it up at some point.

PS: Can't rag on Stryker without ragging on Dan. Honestly I don't think either one is meant to be a more serious fighter. Though in MK 9 it seems Stryker got dropped and Cage tattooed his name on his chest making him a parody of Jersey Shore!

...I don't find Annihilation funny. Sure, it starts off strong -- ninjas shooting from the sky like meteors, Johnny Cage's death (OMG spoilers), cyborg assassins, etc. -- but as the film wears on the stupidity neither increases nor decreases, and the sheer homogeneity of it becomes deadening after a while. Maybe the problem stems from the fact that no one involved in the production of the film was having much fun, whereas in the first MK all the actors seemed to be on the verge of cracking up.

The Mortal Kombat album was awesome!  On cassette and CD!  The movie soundtrack... not so much.  Part 1 was good, but part 2 was horrible.  I never did listen to the Ahnillation soundtrack.  And Conquest was much better than the animated series.  I even got to meet the actor/stuntman who played Smoke before the series was finished.  He happened to be from the same area I was going to high school at.

The first Mortal Kombat movie is a fun watch, Stryker is a a great joke character in the vain of Dan from street Fighter, and the Mortal Kombat theme is amazing! Plus, putting the very well made test pilot on the list because the web series it has spawned "could" be awful just seems cynical.

Looking at this list, it really is impossible to pretend that "mature" video games aren't marketed to children. (At least in this case.)

I couldn't afford the SNES game so I got the GB with my birthday money (along with the CD) and I really enjoyed it.  It was slow, but had unique fatalities and the ability to play as Goro long before MK Trilogy.

So I agree with a lot of stuff he said.  The second Mortal Kombat movie blew.  There's no denying that.  The cartoon also was terrible.

But I have a few huge gripes with this article.  Where is Mortal Kombay vs DC Universe?  Why are you hating on the theme song?  That's single handedly THE BEST THING ABOUT MORTAL KOMBAT.  Why do you not like the first movie?  Sure it had cheesy acting, but all in all, it was still pretty epic.  I'll always remember the first time I heard "GET OVER HERE!".

It goes without saying, you're entitled to your opinion, but I've got to say....this is a pretty bad article, in that sense.

I got disagree with the first movie sucking, I still regard it as one of the best adaptions around, it didn't change the source material, sure it had ham acting, but it's quote, had a good soundtrack and was fun.

I also can't find a single reason for Rebirth to be on here. The general consesus is that is was great.

I totally agree that the first Mortal Kombat movie was one of the best videogame adaptations ever, which is not saying all that much.  It was fun, quotable, and had an awesome soundtrack.  The acting and dialogue were exactly what they should have been.

I don't know anything about Rebirth though.  And yes, the second movie was awful.

    • No argument there.

I love the first Mortal Kombat movie, which is why it didn't make this list in any official capacity. It's a great adaptation and a fun, goofy watch overall.

I don't think too many people would argue that it's a great movie, though.
