We've always heard about Henry Ford's interest in unusual engine configurations - X-8, I-5 and so forth - but never saw much evidence of it until SIA reader Bill Ironside mentioned an old, out of the way sugar beet mill at Greenfield Village where he'd seen a few odd engines. The SIA editors investigated for a story in SIA #19, November-December 1973, and found 56 previously unknown experimental engines dating from about 1907 through 1947. A lot of overhead-camshaft experiments, but they found some more extreme engines as well, including a 144-degree 309-cu.in. V-10 and a twin-crankshaft four (eight?)-cylinder engine.

If the 500-horsepower raging from the Ford Mustang Dark Horse’s 5.0-liter V8 engine isn’t enough to get your adrenaline flowing, Hennessey has your back. The Texas-based hypercar manufacturer announced the production of its supercharged 'H850' Mustang Dark Horse, which offers a nearly 70-percent horsepower increase from the already higher-performance version of the 'S650' Mustang.
Hennessey managed to boost the Dark Horse muscle car’s figures to a heart-pumping 850-horsepower and 650 pound-foot of torque. For a comparison, the original Ford Mustang Dark Horse offers 500-horsepower and 418 pound-foot of torque from the factory.
To achieve the high-performance figures, Hennessey’s version of the Mustang Dark Horse takes the naturally aspirated Gen-4 Coyote 5.0-liter V8 and tops it with a supercharger. In addition to the supercharger, the Ford engine receives additional upgrades that improve the muscle car’s overall performance. A high-flow air induction system, upgraded fuel injectors, and upgraded fuel pump are just a few of the modifications implemented.

"Our supercharged H850 Mustang Dark Horse builds on Ford’s commitment to provide automotive enthusiasts with passion products like the snarling V8-powered S650 Mustang, John Hennessey, Founder and CEO said, adding, “We’re excited to unleash Hennessey’s passion for performance on America’s most iconic muscle car with all the sights, sounds, smells, and sensations that get our blood pumping!”
The Supercharged S650 Dark Horse Mustang is now in production, and according to the video, the Hennessey-enhanced machine sounds like a beast.

Germany’s largest motorsport event, the legendary ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring race, is just around the corner. The race kicks off on June 1st and is expected to draw over 200,000 spectators to the famous road course for an action-packed weekend. This year will also serve as a stage for Volkswagen’s 50th anniversary celebration of its famous Golf model.
As a tribute to the more than 37 million Golf vehicles built to date, three classic Golf GTIs will take part in the ADAC 24h Classic race. Volkswagen will also unveil the new Golf GTI Clubsport to visitors on May 31st, the day before the big race begins. The Golf GTI Clubsport, the most powerful Golf with front-wheel drive and a high-end sports suspension, is characterized by a completely redesigned frontend that features revamped headlights and an illuminated Volkswagen logo. In the rear, the LED taillight clusters have also had a makeover and a large rear roof spoiler ensures maximum downforce.

The performance and torque of the GTI’s turbocharged engine are transferred to the track via an electronically controlled front differential lock. The DCC adaptive chassis control is available as optional equipment. Additionally, the Golf GTI Clubsport is equipped with an exclusive Special driving profile which matches the car’s driving dynamics to the special track characteristics of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Inside, the Golf GTI Clubsport sports a multifunction leather sports steering wheel and a new Infotainment system. VW states that this newly developed system is “extremely intuitive and ensures that the driver can concentrate even better on the road ahead.”
Along with the three classic Golf GTIs, Volkswagen will be setting the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h loose during the 24-hour race. The one-off GTI is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine capable of 256 kW / 348-horsepower. The turbocharged engine sends a maximum of 450 Nm (295 foot-pounds) of torque to the front axle. It utilizes a new bioethanol fuel from Shell: the high-tech fuel E20. The Golf GTI Clubsport 24h will be driven by motorsport stars such as Benny Leuchter from Germany and Johan Kristoffersson from Sweden. The starting number of the GTI race car is appropriately the number 50, representing 50 years of Golf.
From the outside, the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h, equipped with a racing camera, attracts attention with its sophisticated aerodynamics and a special camouflage design that was previously only used on the Golf GTI Clubsport's camouflaged production vehicles.Volkswagen
The featured three classic Golf GTIs will be first-generation models, all piloted by the KWL Motorsport team, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2024. The team will enter a legendary Golf GTI 16S Oettinger (Group 4) from 1981 that has an output of 208-horsepower. Just as legendary: a 1978 Golf GTI Kamei (Group 2) with 183 horsepower, and the third classic model, a 1980 Golf GTI from Group 2 with an output of 184 horsepower, will be recognizable from its GTI camouflage wrapped design, also featuring the '50 years of Golf' logo.
