Recurring Role |
This episode is known as one of the most censored moments on TV. Being sponsored by The American Gas Co. they wanted all references to gas chambers removed from this drama about accountability for the Holocaust. Claude Rains conspired with fellow cast members to defy the idiotic censorship and say 'gas chamber' as originally written in the script.
Maximilian Schell would reprise his role as defense attorney Hans Rolfe in the film version of Judgment at Nuremberg. Schell won an Academy Award for Best Actor becoming the only actor to win an Oscar for a role he originated on television.
This play aired a full two years before the larger, all-star cast motion picture with Spencer Tracy in the Claude Rains lead. This play was originally done on videotape.
