Brief History The University, operates as an international university for business administration, arts, science, engineering, applied science and law. It offers bachelor's, master's, and doctor's degree programs. Established in 1972 by a group of faculty members from graduate schools of Harvard University, University of Pittsburgh and Southern Illinois University, Clayton University is chartered under the laws of the State Missouri and grants all levels of academic degrees. Until 1984 the University operated only in the United States. In 1984, the University began development of overseas programs. In 1990, the University's programs were certified by the institute of Cost and Executive Accountants (ICEA) as well as the London-based Chartered Institute of Transport (CIT). Both of these institutes function as world-wide professional accrediting organizations for their respective profession or industry. The University has also received the Distinguished Service Award from the United States Air Force "in recognition of Outstanding Contributions to the Liaison Officer Program." Clayton's graduates are experienced mid-career working people. They are culturally, ethnically, and professionally diverse. The extremes of age range from twenty something to seventy something. They speak Afrikaans, Cantonese, English, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Malaysian, Mandarin, Norwegian, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, Urdu, and many other languages. Clayton graduates are members of such prestigious organizations as the British Institute of Management, Chartered Institute of Secretaries, Australian Institute of Bankers, Chartered Institute of Transport, and many other well known institutes in Europe and abroad. For many years the University was fully approved by the United States Department of Education (USOE) until 1988 when the USOE discontinued its practice of approving universities, turning the matter over to the States. Graduates may still have their degree certificates authenticated by the United States Department of State. Clayton's graduates have been accepted for further research and study by some of the major universities within the European Union as well as in greater Europe and America.
