Historic
Preservation in Salisbury
The city of Salisbury has a rich heritage of architecture dating from the
nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Domestic and commercial buildings from a variety of stylistic periods
contribute to the distinctive character of the City’s downtown and adjoining
historic neighborhoods. The City has taken a
progressive approach to preserving historic resources, establishing itself
early on at the forefront of preservation in North Carolina. The Salisbury
National Register Historic District, composed of the West Square
neighborhood and most of the downtown, was created in 1975. Soon after, the
City Council designated the West Square as a Local Historic District and
established the Salisbury Historic Preservation Commission to oversee design
review in the West Square. Today the city’s inventory of historic districts
includes ten National Register districts, five Local Districts and seventeen
properties individually-listed on the National Register.
