Como with the deepest lake and the tallest mountains is the most spectacular of all the Italian lakes. Its calm water, dramatic landscape and friendly residents combine to make it a memorable destination.
Europeans travellers since those on their ‘Grand Tour’ have voiced their amazement at the sheer scale of the mountains and the shape of the lake with its vast body of deep blue water lined by brilliant green hillsides dotted with clusters of cream, gold, pink and terracotta homes. Above them looms a ring of rugged peaks, some of which are snow-capped in summer. There are many literary connections including Shelley, Wordsworth and Longfellow. Rossini, Liszt and Bellini composed some of their greatest works whilst staying on Lake Como.
Villa Negri is named after the Italian poetess Ada Negri, heralded by literary society in 1920/30's and the first woman to be admitted to the Italian Academy. She wrote her only novel 'Morning Star' in Bedroom 4 of the villa.
The villa is located in the pretty village of Laglio, 15 minutes from Como town. Laglio is one of a string of villages built on the Roman road framed on one side by the sheer sides of the green mountains and the lake on the other. Laglio has a number of fine villas built largely for the Milanese as summer retreats. A couple of these houses are now home to George Clooney and another to the Robinson family!
Local amenities in the village include two lakeside restaurants, small hotel, bar and grocery shops, including an award winning gold star delicatessen. The local boatyard in the village is one of the oldest in Italy and still makes wooden craft using traditional designs and still run by the Riva family.
