MONDO MARVEL PANEL LIVE! FROM LA
Updated with additional preview images.

"Live! from Los Angeles...it was the 2007 Mondo Marvel Panel"...

That's right folks, another weekend, another comic book convention. In this case, Wizardworld: Los Angeles. The comic book creators and editors that are still standing after New York Comic Con and WonderCon have gathered in the City of Angels, and the first program we covered Live! from the con floor was the Marvel Mondo panel, featuring Marvel creators and editors talking about various projects from all around the Marvel Universe, including World War Hulk.

And because Marvel’s June solicitations are due next week, unusually they have released preview images and June solicitation copy to accompany the panel, and those along with our special World War Hulk preview follow…

Update: Marvel has also provided some additional preview imag3s from projects mentioned during the panel...

On site reporting by by Albert Ching

Marvel kicked off their Wizardworld LA programming early Friday afternoon with "Mondo Marvel," the first of three panels they have scheduled for this weekend. Attendance in the panel appears to light at best, likely due in part to it being 2:30 on a work/school day and the third major convention in less than a month.

Moderating the panel was Marvel's Jim McCann, along with panelists Brett Booth, Tom Brevoort, Mark Paniccia, Chris Gage and Paul Jenkins.

Annihilation: Conquest-Prologue was the first title mentioned, due in June 2007. Gage spoke about the Quasar (the new Quasar, Phyla-Vell) tie-in he's writing, which he described as "Joan of Ark" in space.

McCann added that Annihilation: Conquest will be released n the same pattern as last year's original "Annihilation" event.

He also talked about "Wraith," a "badass character" being introduced.

The six-issue Annihilation: Conquest will run from November 2007-April 2008, and McCann said the villain will not be revealed but it's "somebody you guys know."

Gage added that the villain in Quasar will be the Super-Adaptoid.

Paniccia then discussed the upcoming Mystic Arcana event, with the previously-shown slide of Black Knight displayed. He said the series is meant to "define what magic is in the Marvel Universe."

At this point, C.B. Cebulski, writer of part of Mystic Arcana, joined the panel.

McCann then briefly discussed Avengers/Transformers and the Halo ongoing.

Brevoort moved on to announce Avengers Classic, which will have the same format as the old X-Men Classic, in that it'll have reprints and new stories, and covers by Art Adams.

For much more information on Avengers Classic, please click here.

Daredevil: Battling Jack Murdock, by Zeb Wells and Carmine DiGiandomenico, was discussed next, said to use some of the themes of Daredevil: Father.

Cebulski then introduced Loners, which he called an "ensemble teen drama book" to follow-up on some of the elements of Civil War. "Like an alcoholics anonymous for super-heroes," he said. He also plugged some "surprise characters" to show up in the book and the art of Karl Moline.

Then came news of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake - Vampire Hunter: The First Death, by Laurell K. Hamilton and Joe Phillips, with covers by Brett Booth.

The unconventionally-premised Spider-Man/Red Sonja, a second crossover with Dynamite Entertainment was announced, by Michael Avon Oeming and Mel Rubi (with covers by seemingly ubiquitous cover artist Michael Turner). Five issues, starts in August.

The big Marvel event - World War Hulk - was next.

Paniccia talked about the prologue by Peter David, Al Rio, Sean Phillips and Lee Weeks. "We get a little bit more inside the heads of the characters to find out their reasoning behind sending him out," he said. "We find out why Hulk is so mad."

Staring in June is, of course, World War Hulk, with Greg Pak, John Romita, Jr. and Klaus Janson. They showed the covers but the fifth one was, mysteriously, blacked out with a question mark. Incredible Hulk #106-109 will be a story about heroes "sympathetic to the Hulk," including, according to the slide, Hercules, Angel and Namora.

Gary Frank will return to Hulk to draw a couple issues of that story.

Gage talked about World War Hulk: X-Men #1-3, whichexplores Hulk interrogating Professor Xavier - to find out how he would vote if he was part of the Illuminati group that sent Hulk into space. "It's going to be a lot of fun," said Gage, something he's wanted to do since he was a kid. Covers by Ed McGuinness, art by Andrea DiVito.

Paniccia discussed World War Hulk: Gamma Corps #1-4 by Frank Tieri and Carlos Ferreria, which uses some characters from Paul Jenkins' run on Hulk.

This provided a natural segue for Jenkins to talk about World War Hulk: Frontline, which allows Jenkins to pit Hulk against some of the "disposable" characters in the Marvel Universe.

He then joked about how he was hoping to be on The Colbert Report after killing Typeface in Civil War: Frontline. Jenkins informed that "We're not going to go with the 32 page format, we're going to do 22 pages," although much like Civil War: Frontline, the stories will be broken down into different sections.

The series will also have 2-page "humor backups" with his Sidekicks partner Chris Morneo, involving, in part, the group of super-heroes trying out for the Rhode Island team as part of the 50-state Initiative.

Gage and Paniccia discussed the various World War Hulk tie-ins, including Iron Man (Hulk is naturally mad at Iron Man) and Heroes for Hire, which will take that group to the Savage Land.

Avengers: The Initiative will tie-in to World War Hulk for issues #4 and #5, with Brevoort adding that "The Hulk's arrival on Earth is the first major engagement most of these characters are going to have. It's going to be sort of a baptism by fire for many of these characters."

The Irredeemable Ant-Man will tie-in for issue #8. "He'll basically take advantage of the carnage to loot and plunder," said Brevoort. They then again mentioned the big-name team of Jeph Loeb and David Finch working on the Young Avengers one-shot tie-in.

Jim McCann, moderating the panel in Joe Quesada's stead, then opened up the floor to Q&A.;

A fan asked Booth why he was so quiet, and he answered that it was because he hasn't really read comics in a while and is seeing a lot of it for the first time.

The next fan asked if the existence of the "Illuminati" will become known to the public, and Brevoort answered "maybe," and that the characters that launched Hulk into space will definitely be named.

A fan asked about the new characters introduced in Avengers: The Initiative, saying that many new characters introduced recently have been "wimpy" (to which Brevoort quickly countered, sarcastically but playfully - "Yeah, like the Sentry."

Brevoort responded by saying new characters will be of various power levels, and they're not mandating any certain level.

The next question about was when the new Captain Marvel series would be announced, to which McCann frustratingly answered, "We'll announce that later in the con season."

Jokingly, a fan asked Jenkins when Typeface is coming back. Jenkins said "Dead means dead in comics," which got a laugh, but that led to Jenkins giving some "insider information" about how he asked for a list of Marvel characters that could be possibly killed off, and it was a long list.

No plans for the Invaders, according to Brevoort.

"Is Thor actually going to come out?" - July, said several panelists.

"Are we going to see Storm and Black Panther fight the Hulk?" - Paniccia: "They'll be there."

Jenkins then used the opportunity to say that Hulk will rematch against the Thing in World War Hulk: Frontline #3.

Jenkins then asked the audience who he wanted to win between Thing and Hulk, and, naturally, it was roughly a 50/50 split.

"Will X-Factor be in World War Hulk?" McCann: "No. The mutants will have their hands full," aside, presumably, from World War Hulk: X-Men.

"We got to see the Juggernaut!" (in World War Hulk) a fan exclaimed Gage: "I'm trying to figure out how to get Juggernaut from England to..."

McCann: "A plane!"

Paniccia: "Shi-Ar technology."

Jenkins: "I actually used Shi-Ar technology to get from England myself."

"Will there be any overlap between Annihilation: Conquest and World War Hulk?" - No, not really, according to Brevoort.

"Will we see Iron Man cry again?" - Jenkins: "We actually have a mini-series planned, 'Marvel's Crying Game'"

"Does Hulk have a reaction to Cap's death" - Brevoort: "He cries."

"Will we see the Iron Spider-armor again?" - Brevoort: "Avengers: The Initiative #3."

"Another Spider-Man/Invincible crossover?" - Brevoort: "Pretty much been there, done that. It's time for new vistas like Transformers/Avengers."

"Will Thor be around during World War Hulk?" - Not saying.

"Will Thor's power levels remain the same?" - Yes.

"Is Thor going to come after Iron Man and Mr. Fantastic for making the clone Thor?" - McCann: "You'll have to pick up Thor."

"Does the Sentry play a role in World War Hulk? - Brevoort: "Yes, a big role."

"Punisher during World War Hulk?" - McCann: "Shoots people?"

"Are we ever going to see the original Vision?" - Brevoort: "He's done for a while."

"Wolverine in World War Hulk?" Gage - "Hulk will fight Wolverine in WWH: X-Men."

"Ultimates?" McCann: "Still going...

"Were is issue #13? "Ask Bryan Hitch."

"Hawkeye in World War Hulk?" McCann: "In Young Avengers, there's that girl named Hawkeye."

"Is Hulk able to control his transformations?" Paniccia: "I don't want to say whether or not you'll see Bruce Banner in World War Hulk."

Will Ben and Sally yell at the Hulk since he doesn't know about MySpace?" Brevoort: "The Hulk actually has his own MySpace page."

McCann: "Sally's in his top 8."

"Doc Samson in World War Hulk?" Paniccia: "He'll be in World War Hulk and Hulk #106."

"Frontline possibly an ongoing?" Jenkins: "If we succeed in World War Hulk, we'll do one for whatever the next major event is."

"Where's Bryan Hitch (in regards to Ultimates #13?" Brevoort: "Hitch is actually well into his next project. I have half of an issue already. Ultimates #13 is in the inking stage."

"Will the New Avengers be involved in World War Hulk?" Brevoort: "The characters will, but the books will be not, neither Mighty or New."

"Will World War Hulk ship on time?" "Absolutely."

"What villains will we see fighting the Hulk in World War Hulk?" Paniccia, jokingly: "Tony Stark." He continued, "It's mainly the heroes who will try and protect when Hulk comes to Earth with an army of aliens."

"Thunderbolts?" Brevoort: "Thunderbolts will not be in World War Hulk."

Jenkins: "One character I can tell you will fight the Hulk, not joking, is Captain Rectitude."

"Omega Flight in WWH?" McCann: "They'll be busy getting set up in Canada, which is not part of the world," he joked.

Rick Jones in WWH? McCann: "He'll play a pretty big role."

Defenders reuniting anytime soon? Brevoort: "There's more of a chance of a new Defenders than the original ones, who are all scattered right now."

"Any word on the Jeph Loeb/J. Scott Campbell Spider-Man?" Brevoort: "It looks pretty. There's not a release date yet. We're tired of you guys yelling at us."

Eddie Brock? Sensational Spider-Man #38.

"Is Eddie Brock Venom in Spider-Man/Red Sonja?" Yes.

"Why do you guys hate comic fans?" asked one particularly angry fan. "We don't," was, expectedly, the consensus of the panel, with Jenkins going so far to say "I love you."
