Aland is a province of Finland, it is made up of a group of islands. The islands are located in the Baltic Sea, between Finland and Sweden. Although it belongs to Finland, the culture is close to Swedish one, and the official language is Swedish. It has self-government and own flag. The capital of Aland is Mariehamn.

Eckeron kirkko (Pyhan Laurentiuksen kirkko)

The Church of St. Lawrence was built in the 1280s to replace an earlier wooden church. The tower has been added in 1467, and the wall paintings are from the beginning of the 16th century. The church has been reconstructed in the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century. The remodeling has been done in the 19th century. The altarpiece was painted by B. Reinhold in 1876. The bell dates from the beginning of the 13th century.

Finstromin kirkko (Pyhan Mikaelin kirkko)

The Church of St. Michael is supposed to be built in the end of the 13th century, but another theories suggest sometime between the beginning of the 12th century or in the end of the 15th century. The church replaced an earlier wooden church from around the 1000s. The church has one of the best preserved medieval interior in Finland. There are many medieval wooden sculptures decorating the interior, and the wall paintings are from the middle of the 15th century. Finstrom Church is one of the biggest churches in Aland.

Getan kirkko (Pyhan Yrjon kirkko)

Geta Church is believed to be built in the 1460s, and was dedicated to St. George. It was used as a chapel until the beginning of the 20th century. The altarpiece was donated in 1685. The Empire-style pulpit is from 1842. The major reconstructions have been done in the 17th century, and in 1842. The belfry was built in the middle of the 17th century, but it has been reconstructed in 1685 and in the 19th century.

Hammarlandin kirkko (Pyhan Katariina Aleksandrialaisen kirkko)

The Church of St. Catherine was built in the end of the 13th century, and is oblong in shape. It was destroyed by fire in the beginning of the 15th century. The wall paintings are from 15th century, and the pulpit was placed in 1650. The church has been reconstructed in the 1830s, and the alterpiece was painted by R.W. Ekman in 1869.

Jomalan kirkko (Pyhan Olavin kirkko)

The Church of St. Olaf was built in around 1260-1280s, but the oldest parts may date back to the previous century. The wall paintings decorating the interior is from the 1280s. The present appearance of the church dates from the extensions in the 19th century. Jomala Church is the oldest remaining church in Finland.

Lemlandin kirkko (Pyhan Birgitan kirkko)

The Church of St. Birgitta was probably built in the end of the 13th century. The church replaced an earlier wooden church from the beginning of the 13th century. The tower was added in 1317, and the current spire is from the remodeling in 1817. The altarpiece was painted by R.W. Ekman in 1876, and the pulpit is from 1852. The church has two votive ships, one is from the 17th century, and the other was donated in 1844.

Lemboten kappelin rauniot (Pyhan Olavin kappeli)

The Chapel of St. Olaf was probably built in the 13th century for sailors. The chapel lost its importance gradually in the 16th century, and was abandoned, and became a ruin. The chapel has been restored for the first time in 1892. The latest renovation has been done in 1979. The chapel is surrounded by the stone wall.

Lumparlandin kirkko (Pyhan Andreaksen kirkko)

The history of St. Andrew's Church dates back to the 1540s. The present church was built in 1728 to replace an earlier church which was destroyed by fire. The church was originally painted with red, but it was repainted to yellow in 1870. The current white color dates from 1896. The altarpiece was painted by Victor Westerholm in 1887. The pulpit is from 1842, and the votive ship is from 1835. Lumparland Church is the oldest remaining wooden church in Aland.

Pyhan Yrjon kirkko

The Church of St. George was donated by an elderly couple in the town, and was built in 1926-1927. It was designed by a famous architect Lars Sonck, and has been enlarged and remodeled afterwards. The interior decorations were mainly made by Bruno Tuukkanen who is one of the designers of the flag of Finland. The organ is the biggest in Aland, and the spire of the church is 30 meters high.

Saltvikin kirkko (Pyhan Marian kirkko)

The oldest parts of St. Mary's Church were built in 1280-1300 to replace an earlier wooden church. It is oblong in shape, and has been enlarged and remodeled in the 1370s. The tower was added in around 1380, and the Baroque-style spire was built in the middle of the 18th century. The pulpit is from 1832, and the altarpiece was painted by R.W. Ekman in 1862. The painting representing St. George and a dragon is from 1659.

Sundin kirkko (Pyhan Johannes Kastajan kirkko)

The Church of St. John was built in the end of the 13th century. It is oblong in shape, and the tower and the wings have been added later. The church was destroyed by fire in 1678 and 1921. The altarpiece is a triptych, and it was placed in the middle of the 15th century, and the upper part was added in 1662. The wall paintings date back to the 14th century, and the organ is from 1860. Sund Church is the biggest church in Aland.
