Due to the success of my 'Ultimate Golf Challenge' I was approached by Melvyn Morrow, the Great-Great Grandson of Old Tom Morris and he challenged me to play all the remaining courses associated with Old Tom, throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. In 2008, I completed his challenge and I remain the only person to have done so. Melvyn was very keen that someone would complete this challenge in time, to commemorate the centenary of his Great-Great Grandfathers death in May 2008.
Thomas Mitchell "Tom" Morris Sr, otherwise known as Old Tom Morris was one of the pioneers of professional golf. He was born in St Andrews; the home of golf, in 1821. He was a green keeper, club maker and course designer. He was also apprentice to Allan Robertson, who is generally regarded as the first professional golfer. He also played golf and came second in the first Open Championship in 1860 and won it the following year. He held the record for the largest margin of victory in a major championship at the Open in 1862, winning by 13 strokes. The record stood until 2000, when a certain Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods won the US Open by 15 shots.
