CUPERTINO, Calif. (KTLA) -- Tributes are pouring in from around the globe in reaction to the death of Steve Jobs, the visionary co-founder of Apple who helped usher in the era of the personal computer.
Jobs died Wednesday at the age of 56 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
On Thursday, fans flocked to Apple retail stores, leaving flowers, apples and other tributes to the man who started it all.
Flags were at half staff on Apple's campus in Cupertino, California, where employees and others created a makeshift memorial.
Apple announced Jobs' passing Wednesday along with a tribute on its website.
Jobs' family issued a statement saying a website was in the works "for those who wish to offer tributes and memories."
There has not yet been any mention of public memorial plans.
In 2004, Jobs beat back a rare and less aggressive type of pancreatic cancer, known as islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, but in 2009 he was forced to get a liver transplant.
After several years of failing health, Jobs announced on Aug. 24, 2011 that he was stepping down as Apple's chief executive.
"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know," Jobs wrote in his letter of resignation.
"Unfortunately, that day has come."
Apple announced the death of Jobs -- whose legacy includes the Apple II, Macintosh, iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad.
"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," the statement read.
"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.
"His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."
Jobs is survived by his wife of 20 years, Laurene, and four children, including one from a prior relationship.
His family also released a statement saying Jobs "died peacefully today surrounded by his family."
The statement went on to say, "In his public life, Steve was known as a visionary; in his private life, he cherished his family."
"We are thankful to the many people who have shared their wishes and prayers during the last year of Steve's illness; a website will be provided for those who wish to offer tributes and memories."
