Actor William Shatner is warning social media followers that he has an imposter — and he’s a little disappointed in the job that person is doing.

The 91-year-old “Star Trek” star tweeted to Meta, formerly known as Facebook, to be on the lookout for a Shatner wannabe whose name is a four-letter word to the former Captain Kirk.

“Hey @Meta There’s a fake page purporting to be me trying to contact my fans,” Shatner tweeted from his verified Twitter account Wednesday. “I do not have a middle name and if I did; it would not be Alan.”

He quickly apologized to the Alans of the world who might be offended.

A Meta page created Monday appears to argue Shatner’s case. It appears to be a fan page, full of photos and inspiration sayings including one that reads “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”

It’s unclear if that’s the account Shatner claims is trying to contact his fans, but he linked to it in his tweet. A message to that account was not immediately returned.

Dealing with imposters isn’t alien to the Captain Kirk character he’s played on television and the big screen since 1966. Perhaps the best remembered example was the fifth episode of the show’s inaugural season called “The Enemy Within” in which a transformer malfunction causes the USS Enterprise to deal with a good Kirk and a bad Kirk — both played by Shatner. The Kirk Trekkers came to know and love persevered.
