Huddersfield Town 0-1 Rochdale: Eoghan O'Connell goal knocks out Terriers

  • Published

Carlos Corberan's tenure as Huddersfield Town boss got off to a disappointing start as they slipped to a Carabao Cup defeat by League One side Rochdale.

The Spaniard, who was appointed as Danny Cowley's successor in August, was without last season's 19-goal top scorer Karlan Grant amid speculation the striker could be sold.

Dale took to the lead when defender Eoghan O'Connell headed home a Matty Done free-kick after the break.

Town pushed for a leveller to force a penalty shoot-out but Gavin Bazunu saved well to deny sub Issac Mbenza in the final minute and O'Connell headed off his line in time added on.

The result meant the Terriers were knocked out in the first round by League One opposition for the second successive season.

The game had originally been scheduled to be played at Spotland but had to be switched to the John Smith's Stadium because of pitch work not being completed.
