Steven Gillespie came off the bench to score twice as Colchester fought back from a goal down to beat Bournemouth and close in on the play-off places.
Steve Fletcher's header had put departing Cherries boss Eddie Howe's side ahead after the break.
But Gillespie levelled with a close-range shot before securing the points for the U's by chipping the ball over Bournemouth keeper Shwan Jalal.
Howe is set to be named the new Burnley boss after his 100th game in charge.
The 33-year-old informed his players before the game that he would be leaving after the clash at the Community Stadium to take over at Turf Moor.
Half-time substitute Fletcher's header looked to have given him the perfect send-off, which would have put Bournemouth second in League One, when he found the net by nodding Liam Feeney's cross into the top corner.
But Gillespie, who replaced Ashley Vincent midway through the second half, ruined Howe's leaving party by levelling for the U's after being put through on goal by Ben Coker.
Colchester's club record signing, who had only made one appearance this season, then secured all three points after Bournemouth's defenders failed to clear when under pressure.
Anthony Wordsworth had gone closest to opening the scoring for Colchester before the break, but his free-kick struck the post.
David Mooney also had two chances to put the U's in front, but his glancing header went wide before he failed to round Jalal moments later.
Danny Ings could have put Bournemouth ahead at half-time after being set up by Lee Bradbury but he failed to hit the ball cleanly when bearing down on goal.
U's substitute Kayode Odejayi went close to making it 3-1 late on but his shot flashed wide of Jalal's goal.
Colchester are level on points off sixth-placed Charlton having played the same number of games.
