Mexican actress Ana de la Reguera has nabbed the lead role in the latest Purge horror thriller from Blumhouse, Platinum Dunes and Universal.

The companies are forging ahead with a new chapter in the hit movie series after the strong performance of last year’s installment, The First Purge. That pic became the highest-grossing release to date in the series, which is set in a near-future America where on one day a year all crime, including murder, is legal. The movies have made over $450 million worldwide on a combined budget of around $35 million and also spawned a TV series that recently wrapped its second season on USA Network.

James DeMonaco, who originated the franchise and wrote and directed the first three chapters, penned the script for the as-yet-untitled effort.

Details about the upcoming thriller are being kept in the vault, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that it does take Purge out of its usual metropolitan setting while still dealing with class and race issues in the way the previous films have.

Everardo Gout, who helmed the majority of the Nat Geo series Mars as well as episodes of Luke Cage and The Terror, will direct.

Producers include Jason Blum along with Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. DeMonaco and Sebastien K. Lemercier are also producing via their Man in a Tree shingle.

Universal has set a July 10, 2020, release date for the pic, which is set to begin shooting next month.

The Purge get continues an upward swing for de la Reguera, who is coming off of wrapping playing the female lead opposite Dave Bautista in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. The actress is currently a lead on the Billy Bob Thornton series Goliath, which recently began airing its third season on Amazon, and is working on Ana, an autobiographical series that she created and will star in and executive produce for Amazon Latin America, Comedy Central Latin America and Pataya in the U.S.

De la Reguera is repped by Paradigm, MGMT Entertainment and Gang Tyre.
