On June 18th, Sir Paul McCartney will celebrate his 70th birthday. With this re-recording of the Beatles‘ “Birthday,” Paul Weller honors his fellow Brit with a cover of the 1968 song. Weller and his band lace the original with sharp keyboards and spirited horns, creating a rowdy celebration for Sir Paul.
“I wanted to do something for Paul’s 70th. The man’s been, and still is, an immense and enduring inspiration for me. It was him and his three friends that made me want to pick up a guitar in the first place,” said Weller. “I saw him play live recently and he inspired me just as much as ever, he was brilliant. I just hope he likes our little version, a token of my and the band’s love for him and his music.”
Weller’s version of “Birthday” will be available for download on June 18th for one day only, exclusively on Amazon. Weller will donate all of his proceeds from the single to the War Child organization.
