IT looks like this year's Superbike World Championship won't be heading to the sub-continent after all.

The FIM announced Wednesday that the Indian round of the championship, scheduled to be held at the Buddh International Circuit in November, has been cancelled.

A media statement enigmatically cited "operational challenges" as the reason for its departure from the 2013 and prospective 2014 calendars.

Much speculation surrounded the future of the Indian event, with teams primarily concerned about the country's unusual customs procedcures and expensive import taxes.

The FIM release also concedes safety concerns were also a factor, with the extra time to be used to ensure both the circuit and marshalling are up to the required standards for two-wheel racing.

The troubled event had originally been pencilled in as the second round of the championship following the season-opener at Phillip Island, before being demoted to the final round of the year - one month after the previous round at Jerez.

WSBK organisers Dorna, the event promoter and India's motorsport governing body say they are working towards the Indian race making its debut in 2015.

"[The event promoter] confirms its interest in going ahead with the race in the future," Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India president Vicky Chandhok affirmed.

"We look forward to them concluding an arrangement with [Dorna] in order to arrive at a mutually convenient date and to ensure that India has the privilege of hosting a round in the near future."

The cancellation means this year's Superbike World Championship will consist of 14 rounds, with the finale now the Jerez round on October 20.
