The Toronto Blue Jays have promoted triple-A hitting coach Matt Hague to the MLB coaching staff, general manager Ross Atkins announced Wednesday.
Hague will serve as an assistant hitting coach with the Blue Jays.
Hague, 38, is a former Blue Jays player who joined the team as a hitting coach in the minor leagues ahead of the 2020 season.
The Blue Jays have reshaped their bench in a few ways after a disappointing season at the plate. While hitting coach Guillermo Martinez was brought back for a sixth season, bench coach Don Mattingly added “offensive coordinator” to his title and former hitting strategist Dave Hudgens was reassigned.
The Blue Jays saw a notable dip in power throughout the lineup in 2023. In 2022 the Blue Jays hit 200 home runs and ranked third in MLB with a team OPS of .760. Those numbers dropped in 2023 to just 188 home runs and a team OPS of .746.
