Despite being visually impaired, Professor Kang Young-woo was named policy advisor of the National Council on Disability of the U.S. White House in 2001.
After he graduated with honors at Younsei University, he went on to University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, and he became the first blind Korean to earn both a masters degree (Psychology) and a doctorate (Special Education).
While serving as an advisor in the U.S. government for three years, Kang introduced special programs for the disabled at firefighting and police schools in America to teach American firefighters and police officers how to rescue the disabled in case of fire or accident. He also supported the research and development of six kinds of electronic devices for the disabled, including mobile phones and automatic teller machines.
