Disagree. Cathays Park and Cathays are distinct areas of the city of Cardiff. Cathays is a residential, inner-city suburb whilst Cathays Park is Cardiff's civic centre. Would recommend removing information about Cathays Park from this article and making only a cursory mention of it here, with link. Possibly expand Cathays Park article. Benbristol 12/12/06.

Thanks for your info. I'm trying to introduce some information about the political map of cardiff. I've added some info about the Cathays electoral ward, but this article was originally about the suburb. Hopefully, not to cause confusion, I think it might be appropriate for the ward to have its own article. Do you agree with this? Do you know what geographical areas are located in the ward? Should it include references to Cardiff city centre, Cathays and Cathays Park?(Sloman 19:30, 12 December 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Offhand I don't know info re Cathays electoral ward. I am endeavouring to find out via Web and friends who live in the area. I certainly think if the boundaries for the ward are different for Cathays itself, then it should have its own article at some point. Benbristol 01:05, 14 December 2006.

Welsh name[edit]

I'm not sure if anyone is monitoring this page, but I'm not seeing any evidence that there is an alternative Welsh name as suggested by the first line. Indeed, according to the Welsh language Commissioner the correct standard/Welsh form is Cathays.

I'm struggling to find anything very convincing online, but the Welsh Wicipedia has an article about Y Waun Ddyfal saying the name "roughly matches" part of modern Cathays and cites this to a local Welsh language magazine article from the 1970s. Funnily enough, there's a separate article about Cathays which doesn't mention the Welsh name at all. Historypoints says the Little Health was further north than Cathays. I suspect it may originally have covered the area where the northern part of Cathays was built.

There was a similar issue with Grangetown, with Trelluest a commonly accepted name (and I was told Trefynach when I was originally learning Welsh) though the Welsh language Commissioner coming down (somewhat surprisingly) with 'Grangetown'. As you'll see, someone has added "(Welsh: usually Grangetown, also Trelluest)". Maybe something similar would be better for Cathays, lest people start using Wikipedia as an authoritative source! To be fair, I noticed the other day that Cathays police-station uses this Welsh name, although I don't know if that tells us whether or not they got it from Wikipedia.

@KJP1: the external site with an 80% match[2] has this declaration at the end of the page:

This links to a 2010 version of this page, and confirms that the copying was from Wikipedia, not to it.

The second match is to https://www.flatsharecardiff.co.uk/. This looks like a webpage that had lifted a few sentences from our article. It is an unlikely source for copying to Wikipedia. Verbcatcher (talk) 23:12, 23 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
