The extant content is inconsistent with primary documents regarding the Black Death. Medieval people didn’t know that the Black Death was a bacterial infection, so there is absolutely no way they thought it was spread by flies, nor would they have made a beverage lid to prevent its spread. They thought it was spread through “miasma,” or bad air. Even if they had known it was spread by fleas, ingesting a flea would not have given them plague.
