stub axle (plural stub axles)

  1. (automotive, mechanical engineering) An axle supporting only one wheel of a pair on opposite sides of a vehicle.

      The axles of the Talgo section are U-shaped and the ends form stub-axles on which the wheels revolve freely and independently.
