Etymology[edit]

From the Ancient Greek ὀνοκένταυρος (onokéntauros), an alternative form of ὀνοκένταυρα (onokéntaura, a kind of tailless ape”, “a kind of demon haunting wild places), presumably from ὄνος (ónos, ass) +‎ κένταυρος (kéntauros, centaur).
