From Middle English heed man, from Old English hēafodmann (leader; captain, head of a group), from Proto-West Germanic *haubidamann, equivalent to head +‎ man. Cognate with Dutch hoofdman (chief; chieftain), German Hauptmann (captain), Swedish huvudman (chief; principal; leader). Compare also English headsman.
